The Sea, oil painting by Theodore Major. Gifted to Buxton Museum and Art Gallery by Vahe Funduklian in 1985
Accession number DERSB : 2189
Art history isn’t short on rivalries and Theodore Major and L.S. Lowry had theirs. As Lancashire artists working in similar muted tones, they even disputed who first developed the iconic ‘matchstick men’ style.
But 'The Sea' shows a different side of Major. Instead of busy streets and figures, we’re left with something much quieter: a lone ship, a soft horizon, and an expanse of grey that almost blurs sky and water into one.
It’s a simple scene, but it can stir a lot of feeling. There’s a sense of distance, maybe even loneliness but also a calm stillness. As we come to the last day of Mental Health Awareness Month , it’s a gentle reminder that moments of quiet, however they feel, can give us space to pause and reflect.
