Linda Rolland Art Expressing the visual drama and history of landscape using a variety of media including paint, print

Living in the Peak District, the visual drama and history that can be seen in the local landscape is a constant source of inspiration. Recently, Pembrokeshire has featured as a coastal counterpoint to the local area. These two localities both have the strong emotional impact that influences my work in paint, mixed media, print, collage and photography. Fascinated by the idea of ‘palimpsest’ (somet

hing which has diverse layers or aspects beneath the surface), my inspiration often comes from the ridges tracks and scars on the landscape that remain from past human interactions with landscape. My artwork seeks an analogy with its subject, using layered marks and images, abraded, reshaped, erased and added, seen from above and below, new marks over old, in response to these, once busy, even dangerous, but now quiet places. Industrial remains, the physical structures, folk tales, personal and social histories all contribute to the sense of place and time.
