Cambridge Museum of Technology Cambridge Museum of Technology
An independent Museum based at Cambridge's Riverside Just look for the big chimney!

Based in the original sewage pumping station for Cambridge, the Museum of Technology exists to preserve and exhibit material that is relevant to the Cambridge area, either by its use or its invention. Cambridge Museum of Technology is housed in the Old Pumping Station opposite the white Riverside Bridge built in 2008.

On this day 73 years ago, Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary made the first confirmed ascent of Mount Everest.

But did you know their successful attemt was made with help from technology by the Pye Company?

The expedition used a Pye PTC122 Walkiephone to communicate up the mountain, and we have an example of this model on display at our Pye Museum (sadly not the actual one used at the top of the world!).

The equipment was a 6-valve crystal controlled transmitter and receiver, carried on the chest of the operator. A built-in top mounted microphone was used, together with external headphones and a flexible tape antenna. Imagine using that equipment at the top of a 8,800m mountain?

Even the smallest dog can change the course of the future ✨

Here at Cambridge Museum of Technology we want to inspire everyone to dream big, and that includes our furry friends.

Bring your adorable pooches along with you to the museum to learn all about science, steam and the River Cam. Let them enjoy the smells of the engine room as they take in the machines and maybe catch one of the pesky sewer rats on our children’s trail!

We are proud to be a museum and we allow our four legged friends into all museum buildings - including our friends at Kerb Kollective and The Engineer's House!
