From 11:00am on Saturday 4 July 2026, volunteers who help run the Kent Museum of Freemasonry will be taking part in the annual Canterbury Pageant parade through the City of Canterbury.

The Museum will be one of the stops on the “trail” where visitors will be able to get their programmes stamped – to earn points towards winning chocolate.

We will also be having both Tiny Tots Facepainting and Lord Geoffrey the balloon modeller who will be FREE of charge for children wishing to be facepainted or to have balloon models made for them.

Also available will be drawing materials, where children will be able to design and draw their own banners and decorative aprons – using our large collection of lodge banners and masonic aprons for inspiration.🎉

Did You Know?

At our brilliant museum, a remarkable treasure awaits: a Masonic sword discovered half-buried in the sands of the North African desert. Its journey from the heat of wartime North Africa to our display case is nothing short of extraordinary.

Alongside it rests an authenticating letter, an artefact in its own right, which helped spark our recent deep-dive into the mystery of how this sword came to be lost so far from home.

Our research led us straight into the heart of the North Africa Campaign of the Second World War, uncovering a compelling and little‑known glimpse into Freemasonry on the front lines. The story that emerged is rich, human, and unexpectedly moving.

Visitors can now explore this tale through an immersive QR‑code experience, bringing the desert, the campaign, and the brotherhood of wartime Freemasons vividly to life.

This is a must‑see for Armed Forces veterans, history enthusiasts, and anyone curious about the hidden threads that connect people across conflict and time. Simply bring a pair of headphones with your mobile phone, step inside, and discover the extraordinary Masonic story that lay waiting beneath the desert sands.

Sword in the Sand

At the museum, we have on display a masonic sword and alongside the sword is a letter detailing where the sword was found and who donated it to the museum.

It was found in a desert in North Africa when a tank rolled by uncovering it. The date was 1942 and it was 20 miles south of Benghazi.

Next week, alongside the sword a QR code will be displayed telling the story of why it was probably there. The facts are quite astonishing and tells a story about Freemasonry in the Armed Forces during the North Africa campaign in WW 2.

Why not pay a visit to the museum and listen to the story.
