Daw'r adeilad o Oakdale, pentref glofaol rhyw 10 milltir i’r gogledd o Gaerffili. Cafodd y cerrig sylfaen eu gosod ar 3 Gorffennaf 1916 ac ymhen ychydig dros flwyddyn, agorodd y Stiwt newydd ar 10 Medi 1917.
Rhoddodd Cwmni Glo a Haearn Tredegar fenthyciad o £3,000 i adeiladu’r Stiwt. Roedd y gweithwyr hefyd yn rhoi ceiniog yr wythnos o’u cyflog, sef cyfanswm o £1,554.
Cafodd Oakdale, fel pob Stiwt arall, ei sefydlu yn ganolfan ar gyfer addysg a hamdden. Yn absenoldeb ysgolion uwchradd, roedd llyfrgelloedd sefydliadau y gweithwyr yn rhoi cyfle i lowyr addysgu eu hunain.
Yn ogystal â’r llyfrgell, roedd ystafell ddarllen, ystafell bwyllgor a neuadd gyngerdd i fyny’r grisiau.

It was originally built in Oakdale, a mining village around 10 miles north of Caerphilly. The foundation stones were laid on 3 July 1916 and just over a year later, the new Oakdale Institute was opened on 10 September 1917.
The Tredegar Iron and Coal Company gave a loan of £3,000 to build the Institute. This was on top of the £1,554 from the workmen’s penny-a-week payments.
Workmen’s institutes were established as centres for self-education as well as recreation, ‘the brains of the coalfield’. In the absence of secondary education, the libraries of workmen’s institutes were places were miners could educate themselves through reading.
As well as the library, there was a reading room, a committee room and a concert hall upstairs.
