We are very excited for the brand new Tullie Play Zone this summer 🥳

The Play Zone is a colourful, action-packed play space within our exhibition gallery! From soft play adventures for little explorers to giant games and inflatable fun for older kids, there’s something for every young adventurer to enjoy. Climb, crawl, bounce and build your way through an exciting play experience, then explore the rest of the museum and the Tick Tock Marvels exhibition.

We are hugely grateful to our new corporate partners, Lloyd Motor Group, for supporting this activity.

📆 The Play Zone will be open daily from Saturday 13 June to Sunday 11 October
🎫 £2.50 for U4s, £4.50 for 4-7 year olds, museum admission required for supervising adults. Don't forget that children go free in the rest of the museum!

What do modern Carlisle and Roman Carlisle have in common? Probably a lot more than you think!

Earlier this year we invited local community members to explore the multicultural history of Roman Carlisle and be part of a film for Uncovering Roman Carlisle: Where Worlds Met. Lots was learnt about the diverse origins of the recently discovered objects from the Cricket Club dig that came from as far away as Syria.

Migration and cultural exchange shaped Roman Carlisle and continue to influence Carlisle today.

If you're interested in these themes and want to see this film on the big screen ~ come along to Carlisle Unity Festival on Saturday 6th June 12-4pm for a whole afternoon of meaningful activities and conversations.

P.S. Don't forget that tomorrow is your last chance to come and see the Uncovering Roman Carlisle exhibition alongside Gladiators of Britain.

It’s nearly been one whole week since the Romans returned to Carlisle. We had a wonderful time - we hope you did too.

Thanks to everyone who came along and sniffed some Roman herbs, joined in the soldiers’ march, sampled some Roman cooking, brought a votive offering to our city centre temple, was regaled with Roman stories or even just looked at a Roman on the day.

There’s still this weekend left to catch Gladiators of Britain and Uncovering Roman Carlisle, so if you haven’t already have a roam on down!

Fancy smelling like Kew Gardens? If you don't have a visit planned to rub up against their flowers, our shop might be your next best bet. 🌺

We're delighted to be stocking this wonderful range inspired by Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew by the The English Soap Company. Choose from soap bars, hand cream, hand and body washes, body oils and gift sets. All plant-based and beautifully packaged in a whole garden of elegant scents including elderflower & pomelo, bergamot & ginger, summer rose and jasmine peach.

There are samples in the shop so you can come choose your favourite (or surreptitiously perfume yourself).

The Amati Violin will be back on display in a special spotlight exhibition in Old Tullie House, starting this Saturday🎻

This incredibly rare violin is almost 500 years old, made in 1564 by famed Italian luthier Andrea Amati (c. 1505 – 1577). Despite being hundreds of years old, 2026 marks only 20 years since it was last played, recordings of which will be playing within the exhibition.

Andrea Amati is credited with making the first instrument recognised as a modern violin. This particular violin was part of a set of instruments for King Charles IX of France. The set was separated during the French Revolution with the violin being later acquired by Sybil Mounsey-Heysham of Rockliffe, who donated it to the museum in 1949.

This spotlight exhibition will be running from 30 May to 14 June during museum opening hours and is included with admission.

Dreaming of working for 'one of the nine best UK museums' (according to The Times, May 2026)? You're in luck, two new vacancies have just opened.

Not to panic anyone, but you only have one week left to come and see Gladiators of Britain and Uncovering Roman Carlisle: Where Worlds Met before they close on Sunday 31 May.

Come and get one last look at the monumental heads from the Stanwix dig site, ponder the ethics of the arena and how enthusiastically you might spectate, or just have one last go with one of the replica helmets.

The exhibitions are open Monday-Saturday 10am-4pm & Sunday 11am-4pm and are included with admission.
