The Royal Observer Corps operated buildings on our site at Chop Gate between July 1940 and September 1991. During the 1950's after the demise of the Second World War, the role of the ROC changed, which is when the underground bunker was built in September 1963. For over 50 years, ROC Personnel monitored the skies and radiation levels and were ready to act to protect the local residents and act as

a information cell to Central ROC and RAF Strike Command. After the site was abandoned in 1991 and subsequently sold off in later years, it lay abandoned for nearly 20 years before being restored, having its first public open day in 2010. The site has gone from strength to strength with us acquiring a similar site at nearby Castleton in mid 2012. The post is open several times a year for visits and for private visits by prior arrangement. Please check our page to find out when the next open event is.
