The General Strike took place during 4th-12th May 1926 when 1.75million workers went on strike in support of striking coal miners, who were faced with a reduction in their wages and longer working hours.
Chard's Margaret Bondfield was a member of the TUC General Council and for 7 days she visited 19 towns and cities in SW England, including Chard, Yeovil and Taunton, to bolster support for the strike and make stirring speeches to large audiences.
The Museum is taking part in the General Strike100 national partnership, alongside other Museums, libraries, history groups and archives. the miners slogan was not a penny off the pay, not a minute on the day." (See In Comments)

A very proud night for the Museum tonight at the Chard Annual Town Meeting. Vince Lean received an outstanding achievement award for his many years of selfless service to the museum, he has been pivotal in paving the way and shaping the museum in to the wonderful jewel it is today and his commitment to grant applications has been nothing short of amazing. Also our chairman Howard excepted the cheque for a £1000 grant from Chard Town Council. All in all a wonderful night for us and our longstanding relationship with Chard Town Council…
