This Volunteer's Week, we have been showcasing the projects that our volunteers have been undertaking across the whole Dockyard. ⚓

Recently, the Ships' Volunteers have assisted Shipkeepers Dave and Kate with the Fighting Top back on the foremast of HMS GANNET.

The Victorian sloop's mast is nearing the end of extensive conservation and shipwrighting repairs.

Originally built in 1808, No.1 Smithery was once the beating, fiery heart of the Dockyard—where massive ironwork was forged for the Royal Navy’s greatest ships.

Today, it is the heart of your visit and, currently, home to the Ocean Photographer of the Year exhibition.

👇 Can you guess? What was the most common item to be forged here in the 1800s? Drop your best guess in the comments below...

Volunteers' Week 2026: (Re)building a Champ ✨

We’re proud to be taking part in Volunteers’ Week 2026 – marking 42 years of saying thank you to all our volunteers for everything they do for The Historic Dockyard Chatham.

In this blog, volunteer Andrew discusses the restoration projects that the Heritage Engineering group have been working on.

Most recently, the group has been working to restore one of the Dockyard's Austin Champ military vehicles.

Austin Champs were in service with the Army and Navy as 2.8 litre 1/4 ton trucks, built between 1951-1956, and were intended as a successor to the US Jeep.

Ultimately, it's a complicated construction, and the Rolls-Royce-designed engine proved too complex for widespread military use. In the 1960s, most were succeeded by the cheaper and more versatile Land Rover.

This Champ is proving a challenge to refurbish. The bodywork has suffered from continual contact with mud and the sea air. Infrequent maintenance and usage in the past have also left the brakes ineffective or seized-on (sometimes on the same day). The petrol tank has been restored and relined, and the repainting of the car is just about to begin.

Frank is leading the fabrication and installation of new bodywork to replace the rusty lattice, often hidden beneath previous 'repairs'. Dennis and Joe are working on the engine, transmission, and brakes. Vic and Andrew waft around with Nato Green paint brushes.

We are also lucky that long-standing team member Mick is restoring his own personal Champ, so we have useful reference points and patterns for the parts requiring remanufacture.

The Champ will rise again!

You may have seen yesterday's post celebrating the Historic Lifeboat Collection - Chatham turning 30 🥂

The day was marked with two very special recognitions being awarded:

🔰 First, the museum gallery was honoured with an Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Engineering Heritage Award plaque in recognition of “improving the world through engineering”. The award was presented by IMechE’s Heritage Committee and received on behalf of the RNLI by Gallery Manager Ian.

🏅 The ceremony finished with the presentation of a Volunteer Long-Service Award for 60 years of dedication to volunteer David. The award was presented by Charles Hunter-Pease (Chair of the RNLI 2013-16).

👏👏👏 Congratulations to all involved - they are both very well deserved.

Today marks 30 years since the opening of the Historic Dockyard's RNLI gallery Historic Lifeboat Collection - Chatham .

The RNLI Historic Lifeboat Collection was first moved into Slip 4 in 1994, initially for temporary storage. The RNLI Chatham Historic Lifeboat Collection was officially opened on 11 September 1996. The ceremony was attended by RNLI President, HRH The Duke of Kent.

The Dockyard is home to the UK's largest collection of historic lifeboats from the RNLI, and features over 100 years of lifeboat history.

The gallery features vessels from the earliest 1897 pulling and sailing lifeboat to the inshore vessels funded by Blue Peter appeals and the Tyne class all-weather lifeboat, Spirit of Lowestoft, preserving the charity's long and fascinating history.

This gallery is one of the earliest Heritage Lottery Fund projects in the country. It is a pioneering example of an accessible museum gallery, with a level walkway throughout.

🥂 Here's to a wonderful 30 years and many more to come. 👏
