Calling all teachers!
On Tuesday 16 June, join our Learning Team and a guest educationalist for a FREE hands-on, inspiring CPD session. We're celebrating the discovery of Britain’s largest gold Iron Age Coin Hoard, found in Great Baddow and on display for the first time from 18 July 2026.

Happy Volunteers Week!

We’re saying a massive THANK YOU to our amazing volunteers! From recording collections, getting stuck in during events and activities, to gathering feedback and being on hand to help customers. All our volunteers bring their experiences and enthusiasm, and its likely you’ll have met one or two – or several more! - when you’ve visited or seen us out and about.

During International Museum Day, one of our volunteers, Nick, told us all about his favourite place in the museum and his own story behind it. Here’s the video in case you missed it!

If you are interested in volunteering at the museum, visit our website and get in touch at https://www.museumofchelmsford.co.uk/get-involved/volunteering/

Tomorrow our newest exhibition 'Roots Chelmsford Windrush' opens in the Our Chelmsford room.

This collaboration with Roots Chelmsford gives us the opportunity to learn more about the story of those who came over from the Caribbean during World War II to help the United Kingdom rebuild by working in a variety of sectors such as construction, public transport, factories, manufacturing, etc.

We hope to continue to celebrate the contributions made by the Windrush generation beyond Windrush Day.

Come along and learn about the incredible people who have helped Chelmsford (the UK) become what it is today.

What objects tell Chelmsford’s story today?

Spark! and the Museum of Chelmsford want to hear what objects tell your story of life in Chelmsford now, to help shape the museum's future collection.

Maxine Dempster at the Museum of Chelmsford shares:

"I discovered my object that would represent my story in Chelmsford today before we moved here. Introducing my sleepy puppy.

Whilst getting ready to move, we needed to get rid of a lot of rubbish, which meant a trip to one of my favourite places in Chelmsford.

While there, I heard a rattle and a clink as a small ceramic object fell by the side of the car. Scooping it up, I saw it was this sleepy puppy, and I brought him home with me.

He's been sat snoozing in the sunshine for over 5 years now, nestled in the warm soil of my house plants. Did he find me to accompany me on my move to Chelmsford? Or did he know he'd find a peaceful place to nap for many years to come?!"

What object would you choose? Add it to the survey linked below, plus take a picture and tag it

Join Chris Stone, environmentalist and author, here at the museum on 27 June at 11am to discover the hidden deserts of Europe. European deserts are vast, sandy and little-known landscapes that feel a world away from their surroundings. They were once seen as barren and unwelcoming yet are now becoming recognised as vital habitats for rare wildlife and rich in human history.

In this visually striking talk, Chris Stone reveals why these overlooked places matter, how they are under threat and why they deserve protection. He offers a fresh and thought-provoking look at Europe’s natural environment and challenges common perceptions about these extraordinary landscapes which are much closer than you think.

Don’t 'desert' this talk – book your tickets now and dig deeper into the unknown!
