The Artist Studios are home to a group of talented Essex artists, designers, makers and creatives producing quality artwork in a variety of mediums and styles - from painting, jewellery, glass, photography, arts & crafts, and much more. The studios are situated in the historic courtyard of The Stables at Hylands Estate in the city of Chelmsford, Essex. Within The Stables you can also find The Stab

les Café and the Friends of Hylands House second-hand bookshop and gallery where regular exhibitions are held. On the 3rd Sunday of every month, The Stables takes part in the Hylands Estate Open Day. During this event you can explore the studios of this vibrant community, discover unique handmade pieces available to purchase, or get creative yourself and book one of our experiences or workshops. Grab a coffee and lunch in The Stables Café while you’re there and enjoy the live music in the courtyard. The Stables is often a host for a variety events, so be sure to keep an eye on our socials and website for any upcoming ones.

Are you ready to join our talented community of creatives at Hylands Estate? One of our public-facing ground-floor studios in The Stables is now available for applications!

This charming studio measures 4m x 1.9m, offering a cosy space ideal for an artist or maker. You will also have the opportunity to showcase your work in our Artist Shop, which is open to the public seven days a week.

The space is £153.96 + VAT per month, with all bills and utilities included. Please note, as a public-facing studio, there are minimum opening hours to welcome visitors and share your craft.

Our first Open Estate Day of 2025 is just a week away on Sunday 12 January!
Enjoy a day out at Hylands Estate exploring the historic Hylands House, meeting talented local artists in their studios, and finding unique treasures in the Artist Shop and second-hand bookshop. With live music, family-friendly activities, guided house tours, and delicious street food and local traders outside, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
