ARTIST FEATURE ✨

Sam Kelser, a self-taught painter working in acrylic, whose contemporary narrative figurative works blur the line between intimate reality and haunting modern folklore.

Working from imagination or from old photographs, she is a storyteller, a weaver of tales in painterly form, an artist who makes work which at once asks more questions than it answers.

Her latest works started as a practice of healing, and grew into a fascination with people, emotion, psychology and the countless stories we create about one another. They can be found down at Sixteen Gallery until 7 October in Sam’s first solo exhibition entitled A Hugo Shaped Hole.

ARTIST FEATURE ✨

Steven John Owen is an abstract painter whose work explores colour, geometry and texture. Working from his Bristol studio, his self taught practice draws on inspiration from his background in garden design with an approach both deeply intuitive and meticulously crafted.

Steven treats his canvases as a cultivated spaces, balancing structured compositions with organic flow. His geometry is never rigid; instead, it maintains an effortless rhythmic quality that feels purposefully laid out, yet pleasingly off-kilter.

ARTIST FEATURE ✨

Jonathan Oakes is an abstract artist based in Gloucester. Influenced by environmental concerns and the difference between natural and synthetic experiences. Jonathan creates mixed media works in an organic style provoking thoughtfulness and flights of imagination in his viewers.

Thoroughly abstract in style, and uncompromising in his approach to deep thinking and thoughtful representation of experience, society and the human condition; Jonathan is expressive in that genuine way, before AI told everyone to say it. His works are truthful, organic, at times poignant, and often as entirely un-perfect as the subjects they represent.

Happy Monday Artists!

Here are a few opportunities we’d like to highlight this week. With some near middle and far deadlines, to suit any style of organised artist 😉

1. The Sixteen Gallery Postcard Show

We know you know it by now, but with the deadline approaching, we thought we’d flirt with a little reminder. You can still buy boards online for another week or so, so it’s not too late to get involved!

Deadline: Thursday 8 October
Entry: £10 per board

2. The Guildford House Open

This is an annual exhibition celebrating outstanding contemporary art, hosted in the elegant 17th-century, Guildford House Gallery in the heart of Guildford. The exhibition showcases around 100 artworks selected by a panel of judges committed to presenting the very best in contemporary practice.

Deadline: Wednesday 30 September
Entry: £15

3. The Pastel Society

Open to artists working in pastel and contemporary dry media, the 128th Annual Exhibition will celebrate one of the five essential components of contemporary painting and drawing: colour. Artists are invited to explore how colour can unite us through a shared language of expression.

Deadline: Friday 20 November
Entry: £22

4. The Gallery at Green & Stone: Works on Paper

The sixth edition of Green & Stones Works on Paper – their annual international open call and exhibition celebrating work made on, or with, paper – will be a special one as the first exhibition of their centenary year! They are inviting artists to submit work across drawing, watercolour, printmaking, collage, illustration, book arts, mixed media and experimental approaches to paper for their January exhibition.

Deadline: Wednesday 25 November
Entry: £20

ARTIST FEATURE ✨

Anita Saunders is a painter and printmaker based in the Cotswolds.

She works across different printmaking techniques from drypoint to lino to screen printing, alongside oil and acrylic painting; following inspiration from the area of outstanding natural beauty around her, creating work which brings to life the wildlife she encounters.
