Claude Monet (1840–1926) painted Vétheuil, effet du matin (1901), a legendary Impressionist oil masterwork. This artwork captures the fleeting light of a misty morning in the French village of Vétheuil, where colors dissolve into a shimmering atmosphere.
The journey of this artwork is one of rediscovery. On April 16, 2026, it sold for €10.2 million ($11.3 million) at Sotheby’s Paris, setting a new record for the artist in France. The painting had been tucked away in a private French collection for over 50 years and hadn't been seen by the public for nearly a century. Its reappearance revealed Monet's mastery of "series" painting, where he returned to the same spot at different hours to chase the perfect light. It has now moved into a private collection.
