Chorley Heritage Centre Support Group

Chorley Heritage Centre Support Group Voluntary organisation driven by a mutual interest of its members in preserving the history of Chorley (Lancashire) and the surrounding area. Why do it?

Who are the Chorley Heritage Centre Supporters Group? We are a non-profit making group of volunteers who have collectively undertaken to preserve and archive any material relating to Chorley. For this purpose, Chorley is defined as the current Borough boundaries as can be seen on the map below. Our Archiving efforts will initially be aimed at establishing website to enable the material currently i

n our care to be archived and available for local persons, general public, Schools and Student use. What are we up to at this time? A major part of our work, until we get a home of our own, is in setting up a support group with the appropriate organization and training to manage the work of archiving and preservation of the material we already have, working to the recognised industry standards laid down by the LCC Archiving Service and The West Yorkshire Archive Community Accreditation Scheme. At a later stage, we will be arranging collections in the community of materials which have a Chorley Origin, or Connection, these collections will be announced to enable local residents to contribute their photographs, emphura and personal oral reminiscences to the archive. Material we have and promised already will be archived onto the Website and will be displayed in exhibitions to generate interest in what we are doing and to achieve a degree of empathy and engagement by the people of Chorley toward the centre. We are very interested in our collection of heritage and more specifically in anything of local interest which we may be able to build up a picture of life in the Chorley Borough, initially we are working on the past c.200 years, (1800 to 2010) and in the future we will be looking back to the Saxons and beyond. Though that's not to say we are not interested in any material from that period which may come our way. How can you help? Many of us have boxes of old photo's, postcards, diaries or items of local interest to do with all aspects of life in the town, these are often tucked away in the loft, and may be lost forever when you are no longer around; you may archive them with us and BEAT THE SKIP; and if you want any particular item(s) back, that can be easily arranged after it is archived. If you have old photographs with people on them, do you know them or the story behind the photo? They will be a lot more useful to us and your future generations if you could name them. The information on the internet will be available to all and will be most useful especially to those who want to know what life was really like for the inhabitants of Chorley over the ages and very useful for tracing their family tree. How can you help now? Join us as a fellow volunteer, bring along any items you have of local interest, showing life in all its facets - ordinary people and activities with a connection to Chorley are as welcome as significant events especially if you have a tale or some involvement in the event. The more information we have about items the more valuable it is to the archive, stories and photos from different families and perspectives begin to create threads of an interesting story. Should you be worried about copyright? It is most important that the material you provide for the archive has a clear history of copyright and has not been copied from other publications, or taken by a Professional Photographer even if it was for you. If you are in doubt, or it is a very important part of your history, bring it along anyway and we will endeavour to get a release for the copyright and acknowledge the owner. In some circumstances we can accept printed material and postcards, if in doubt bring them along too and we will check them. What happens when we bring our history in? Firstly we will talk to you about your past and about the items you wish to loan, or give, to the Heritage Centre to make sure you are happy with signing it over to us to be archived. We will take down notes so we won't forget anything. Sometimes. with your permission, we will digitally record your reminiscences and include them in the archive as a sound only record, or sound and pictures. Where do I bring any Items for the archive? Currently we are working on obtaining a home of our own for everything. Until we get that and have a safe place to hold items, then we can only accept items which may otherwise be lost to the skip. Please use ‘Contact Us’at the bottom of the page if you have any worries, Our future plans will be published in the Chorley Guardian, and on this Website from time to time. With sincere thanks to everyone who has assisted us in this venture so far.

The traditional Church Walking Days take place in the month of June and have long been a cherished part of Chorley's history, bringing communities together through faith, friendship and local pride. These old photographs from our archives give us a glimpse into the town's rich heritage and are a fantastic reminder of Chorley's strong community spirit and traditions connecting people today.

Photographs from our monthly archive collection this month capture some lively scenes reminiscent of years gone by, when large crowds would line the streets for Chorley’s annual carnival parade. Those events brought together residents and visitors in celebration, creating lasting memories of music, costumes, and generating community pride. While the parade may belong to the past, its spirit lives on in events like the Chorley 10K/2K run held on May 3rd 2026.
These moments in time, offer a glimpse into Chorley’s rich social history. They remind us of the enduring importance of coming together as a community, whether for sport, celebration, or simple enjoyment of shared experiences.

As we move into April, we open our archives about a local legend Chorley seems to have tucked away in the history books!
Meet Sheila Parker, the Brindle Street girl who didn’t just play the game; she broke the ceiling for every woman in football today. Growing up overlooking Rangletts Recreation Ground and Chorley FC, Sheila wasn’t just a spectator—she was a force of nature. Before the world caught up, she was the girl teaching the local lads how to properly slide tackle and pass a ball.
Her story is nothing short of extraordinary:
• The Ultimate Trailblazer: At just 13, she signed for the legendary Dick, Kerr Ladies before moving to Chorley Ladies.
• England’s First Leader: When the ban on women’s football was finally lifted, Sheila didn't just make the team—she was hand-picked as the first-ever official England Captain.
• A Born Winner: She led the national side to their first home international championship and famously captained Fodens to a shock FA Cup victory.
• An Absolute Machine: Think modern strikers are clinical? In 1975, Sheila netted a mind-blowing 51 goals in just 14 games for Preston.
Despite six Division One titles and an MBE in 2021 for her services to the sport and charity, Sheila Parker remains "forgotten". Sheila didn’t just play for Chorley; she put Chorley on the map of footballing history for women!

Chorley Town Trail Event
On a rather wet afternoon on Thurs 26th February 2026, Bill Walker led a Town Trail session during a training day organised by John Hill for town centre Chorley Council staff. Bill was joined by three Heritage Group Committee members.
The walk around the Town Trail, stopping at points of historical interest, was informative, both for Chorley-born staff, and for those with less local knowledge. On their return to the Town Hall, each participant was given copies of both Town Trail leaflets.

I am delighted to add a new addition to the Chorley Heritage Group archives, thanks to the generosity of Mrs Louise Dawson of Chorley.
Louise recently contacted us with a very special enquiry: she offered to donate a box of her late father’s extensive research documents tracing his family tree. Her father was Dennis Gillibrand, a name synonymous with Chorley’s rich history.
This donation holds a very personal connection for our team. I personally had the great pleasure of assisting Dennis and his brother, Gervaise, in my role as Local History Librarian at Chorley Library for many years. They were regular visitors to the library and a true joy to work with, always passionate about uncovering the stories of their ancestors. The Gillibrand’s are one of Chorley's most prominent historical families, formerly of Gillibrand Hall, and their influence on the town's development over the centuries was significant. Sadly, Dennis passed away in 2020, but Louise wanted to ensure his life’s work was kept in safe hands where it could be preserved for future generations. We have accepted this collection with great pleasure and look forward to the "detective work" ahead as we discover the treasures Dennis collected.
Thank you, Louise, for choosing Chorley Heritage Group.

Chairman’s update February.

At our Heritage Committee Meeting on Wednesday 11th February, we were very pleased to welcome Chorley's Mayor, Cllr Alistair Morwood, along with Cllrs Aaron Beaver, Margaret France and Gordon France.
As well as contributing to discussion, the Councillors were able to visit the area in the Town Hall where the Heritage Group's archives are stored.
Our Archivist, Linda Langford and colleague Peter Wynne have spent many hours re-organising and updating our stored resources, and provided the Councillors with a description of our impressive archiving system.

MODELLING THE TOWN TRAIL
As you may recall, in November 2025, the Mayor and Mayoress of Chorley, Cllr Alistair and Jane Morwood, officially launched the Chorley Town Trail.
To complement the release of the guide leaflets, a three-dimensional display has also been produced by Chorley Heritage Group, which is a large-scale map of the town centre showcasing all the sites featured in the trail. Local primary schools, along with the Inspire Youth Zone were invited to participate in the model-making process, and you can now view some of these impressive models on the first floor of Chorley Library, where you will also find more in-depth information about the participating schools.
Our goal is to eventually model all the sites, and we hope that more schools and local groups will be inspired to take part over the coming months. If you represent a local school, youth group, or community organisation and would like to join this project, you would be very welcome. A member of the
Chorley Heritage Centre Support Group would be happy to speak with your group to explain what is involved.
This is a fantastic opportunity for teachers to combine local history into the curriculum and for young people to engage with their local heritage and develop a deeper appreciation for the town.
