We can’t wait to welcome Hedgerows in the Hills later this month!

CPRE Shropshire's 'Hedgerows in the hills' event at Acton Scott Heritage Farm on 24 and 25 October this year is part of celebrating our charity's Centenary year and the sixth year of our ongoing Hedgerow Heroes project. 🪲🪺🌲🍃

It's a Family-friendly event celebrating the Shropshire countryside with an array of activity's including :

Our next spotlight for today falls on Nigel Adams, a countryside management specialist and expert in hedgerow management. Nigel has recently published a book on hedge laying that will be available to buy throughout the weekend . He's going to be busy across both days as a speaker, lead walker and in attendance on the National Hedgelaying Society stall - located in the 'Wood crafts' area !🌳🌲🌴

🍎 Ever wondered how an apple becomes c***r?

Next weekend, we're doing it the old-fashioned way.

First, freshly harvested apples are crushed beneath the huge stone wheel of our c***r mill — powered by one of our Shire horses. 🐴

The scratter then breaks the apples up into a fine pulp before it is packed into our traditional wooden press and slowly squeezed to release the juice.

Orchard → mill → scratter → press → c***r.

🐴🍎 Now THAT is horse power…

Before electric motors and modern machinery, jobs around the farm relied on a very different sort of power.

During our Apple Weekend, watch one of our magnificent Shire horses turn the great stone wheel of our traditional c***r mill, crushing freshly harvested apples ready for pressing.

It’s farming history happening right in front of you — noisy, messy, wonderfully autumnal and powered by one very large horse! Edward!

🚂 Full steam ahead at Acton Scott Heritage Farm!

There'll be more than c***r making happening at the farm next weekend…

We're delighted to welcome the Cheshire Live Steamers for two days of live steam action!

Their miniature steam engines will be running around the farm throughout the weekend, with rides for our younger visitors — although we suspect there may be a few grown-up steam enthusiasts watching rather closely too. 👀

If your apple tree has gone slightly overboard this year, bring them along to Acton Scott next weekend!

Visitors are welcome to add their apples to our traditional c***r mill as we demonstrate how generations of farmers turned the autumn harvest into c***r.

Bring a suitable container too and you can take away some of the freshly pressed juice to ferment at home. 🍎
