✨Friday Finds✨
This beautiful bird brooch was discovered during excavations at the Roman Amphitheatre in Cirencester in 1966. Crafted from copper alloy, it is decorated with striking blue and red enamel inlays. The design is thought to represent a duck, with the enamel carefully used to delineate the feathers and tail.
Brooches shaped like animals or birds are known as zoomorphic brooches, and they were popular across the Roman Empire. Archaeological evidence suggests that many examples of this type were produced in Britain and Gaul. Interestingly, expert analysis indicates that this particular brooch displays a continental style of decoration, rather than a typically Romano-British one.
During the Roman period, both men and women wore decorative brooches to fasten their clothing. It has been suggested that Roman soldiers often favoured playful zoomorphic designs such as this. Some archaeologists also believe such brooches may have been purchased as souvenirs from visits to sacred sites.
This brooch is one of only a few personal items recovered during excavations at the amphitheatre. Come to see it for yourself in our Roman Galleries!

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻?

When Britain ceased to be part of the Roman Empire, South-West Britain followed a different path from the emerging Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of the east.

From Cornwall to south Gloucestershire, these early medieval ‘hidden kingdoms’ have often been overlooked. Now, a major new research project is exploring their landscapes, communities and material culture.

Join Professor Stephen Rippon for this year’s 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗔𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, sharing the initial results of this fascinating work.
