1620s House & Garden at Donington le Heath, Leicestershire, UK This rare and beautiful house is a surviving example of a family home built in the 13th century.

Based in a Medieval Manor site dating back to 1280, The 1620s House and Garden has a fascinating history and was owned by one of the Gunpowder Plotters! The 1620s House at Donington le Heath is a surviving example of a family home built around seven hundred years ago and modernised with new windows, roof and fireplaces in 1618. The site is currently being refurbished as a fully furnished family home from the 1620s. Surrounding the House, are period gardens and woodland planted as part of the development of the National Forest. The gardens, re-created in a 17th century style, include flower and herb gardens, an ornamental maze and an orchard. The Old Barn Team Room will be open from 11.00 am – 4.00 pm during site open season, serving home baked cakes, soup and sandwiches and a range of hot and cold drinks. On Tuesday 20 October join Dr Pumpkin and his friends for some Halloween crafts and games in our ancient manor.

You will have the chance to create a beautiful flower arrangement inside a pumpkin, make a traditional corn amulet to protect you from evil spirits, as well as playing a frightfully fun spooky board game!

Come dressed in your best Halloween costume – there are prizes to be won!

All materials are included.

There are two sessions running: 10:30am – 12pm & 1:30pm – 3pm

Join us this All-Hallows’ Eve (Saturday 31 October) for an atmospheric candlelit tour of our ancient house. The 17th Century was a very superstitious time: witchcraft and other worldly spirits were feared by the masses. King James I even wrote a book on ‘Daemonologie’ outlining the ways in which sorcery and demons could corrupt.

As such, certain measures and practices were undertaken to protect against such evils. Evidence of this is found throughout our house from markings on the walls & ceilings to burnings in wood and graffiti in windows.

Our wonderful volunteers will guide you on a tour through the house and you’ll learn about the various beliefs & superstitions of old and witness a collection of different marks made to protect the house from evil spirits.

Tours are 1hr in length at:

6pm – 7pm
6:30pm- 7.30pm
7pm – 8pm
7:30pm – 8.30pm

Remember, remember to mark your calendar with this year's Gunpowder Plot day!

Join us on Sunday 1 November for this entertaining re telling of the story behind the Gunpowder Plot. Discover how the family that lived in the 1620s House were connected to it.

See the story of the Plot unfold through a series of short scenarios through our house and grounds.

Learn about the properties of gunpowder with our re-enactors and see examples of a 17th century cannon and muskets being fired. BEWARE the bangs are loud. Ear Defenders are available for those with aural sensitivities.

Our younger visitors can get stuck into some themed craft activities, a fun trail, and help us to catch the dastardly Guy Fawkes.

£3 per person plus normal site admission. No need to pre-book, just pay on arrival.

Visit any settlement in the land and there will be ancient buildings hidden in plain sight. Behind a Victorian façade is a Tudor house. Underneath a Georgian frontage is a mediaeval cottage. What is now a modern farm may once have been a castle. We know relatively little about the ancient buildings that surround us, yet buildings archaeology can offer us so many clues for discovering the secrets of hidden historic houses.
