Art Exchange

Art Exchange – where art and ideas meet. Placing the artist at its core, Art Exchange is a space where art, artists and audiences can meet.

Our programme of exhibitions, talks and events creates a platform for ideas to be exchanged and connections to be made. We show international, contemporary art by established and emerging artists, historic figures who continue to inspire, and group shows relevant to current debate. Our artist-in-residence programme allows us to commission new works that respond to the world around us. Sited at the

University of Essex in Colchester, we are inspired by an intellectually curious audience, while the research and study around us feeds into our programme of talks, films and debate. Combined with our family days, workshops with schools and outreach activity, we offer ways for everyone to get involved and enjoy great art.

An important update: Art Exchange will not be re-opening this academic year; our arts and cultural services team will instead be focusing on delivering a programme of events and workshops in other spaces.

Since opening in 1989, Art Exchange has been all about sparking creativity and conversation, so we hope to continue doing just that. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who takes part in our arts events and activities, and we hope you will continue to support us.

While the gallery is closed, the University’s cultural life will continue through the activities being hosted by the Lakeside Theatre, our Art and Special Collections (based in University of Essex Library), and the Essex Collection of Art from Latin America (ESCALA).

Our arts and cultural services team be sharing more information as the academic year gets underway and will be inviting you to continue to join us in a range of creative opportunities across our campuses.

We're closed for summer!

After an amazing year packed with exhibitions, workshops, and events, we’re taking a summer break!

To everyone who visited and participated in our activities this year, whether you're University of Essex students, staff, or from the local community, a huge thank you for being involved and making it an incredible year!

Don't forget you can still visit our 'Tyger Tyger!' exhibition on the first floor of the Albert Sloman Library, until 1 September.

Congratulations to everyone graduating from University of Essex this week!

We've loved watching the celebrations from Square 5, enjoying one of our favourite times of year when we get to celebrate all the achievements you've worked so hard for!
