Crail Museum and Heritage Centre
A Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation; Scottish Charity No SC023505

The Museum provides an insight into the past life of this ancient Royal Burgh, its kirk, seafaring tradition, 229 year-old golf club and airfield history (HMS Jackdaw, Fleet Air Arm Station, HMS Bruce Boys Training School and Joint Services School for Linguists). Crail has been a prosper

ous and important trading and fishing port since the 12th century, and its picturesque harbour is one of the most frequent images in Scottish calendars and guides. Today there is still commercial fishing from the harbour for crab and lobster which have a reputation for quality. The Museum also has a well stocked shop featuring Scottish gifts, books and toys.

Extracts from the minute book of Crail Sea Box

8th September 1743 That whereas the Loft in the Church belonging to the Sea Box has failed, and it being necessary to have it immediately repaired; our funds being low, we therefore applied to the Managers of the Fishers Box for their assistance towards said reparation (seeing they were by us and our predecessors always indulged to accommodate themselves in our said loft) whereunto they unanimously consented and agreed to pay the one half of the charge, and they, having proposed that by our authority the two first seats should be reserved for sailors and fishermen only, we have, with one consent, gone into said proposal and ordered that doors shall be put on the said seats for that purpose.27th October 1743 The charges for the above repairs came to £9: 10/7, and the Box authorised payment of £4: 16/-
