Regal Movieplex.
In the summer of 1914 the Cromer Theatre of Varieties opened as one of the earliest cinemas in the country. It was opened by a local greengrocer and butcher. It would show films, live shows and boxing. It then became the Central Cinema and specialised in movies and talkies. Over time it was greatly expanded and had a 160 seat balcony installed in the 20's. Then it became the Regal. Eventually it suffered dwindling visitors and had to close in 1976. It then reopened and closed again before finally being opened for good in 1985. In 2007, merlin cinemas took ownership of the venue and refurbished it. Today, known as the Regal Movieplex, popular films are shown across 4 screens.

Photograph of Comer Church n 1874. On the right can be seen the remains of the chancel - the Bishop of Norwich had granted permission for demolition in 1681, as a cost saving. The rector used gunpowder... It wasn't until 1887 that the current chancel was built.

Southern Bungalow.
Built around 1890 on the Norwich Road, this building is instantly recognisable for its highly decorative design that almost appears oriental. Notably its wrap around cast iron veranda. Originally called the Northern and Southern Bungalows they were two separate properties, probably built to let.
In 1898 Northern Bungalow was occupied by Mrs Carman, later around 1900 by R. Bone, retired licensee of the Red Lion Hotel. Southern Bungalow was occupied in 1898 by Frank Hartt and later by Barrington Hooper and family, when Northern Bungalow became vacant Barrington Hooper took it over, converted the two properties into one and opened the Southern Bungalow Hotel.
Later it was empty for some time but then became part of Sutherland House School for Girls, an independent school. Then in 1962 the building was converted into flats which it remains as today.

Following the comments earlier this week on Nelson and Cromer, we know Horatio Nelson was at school in North Walsham and in later life visited the Assembly Rooms in Aylsham, but we have no definitive proof he ever visited Cromer. He did come very close in September 1773, when a young midshipman on HMS Carcass, returning from the Arctic. Given the considerable error in their logbook longitude reading, they were doubtless very pleased to see Cromer lighthouse!
