PORTAL 2026 ✨ Laura Nicholls

As a multi-disciplinary illustrator, motion designer and maker, Laura Nicholls works with people to create work that educates, enlightens and entertains.

Inspired by different perspectives and methods of placemaking, Laura creates campaigns that interpret topical conversations, deliver thought provoking messages, encourage understanding, or that simply look to make someone’s day through humorous social interactions.

With work that explores loneliness in older people and Men’s Sheds, Laura is interested in community building and collaboration, and is eager to communicate to audiences big and small.

Portal will be on display in Gallery 1 until Saturday 21 November

Fel darlunydd amlddisgyblaethol, dylunydd mudiant a gwneuthurwr, mae Laura Nicholls yn gweithio gyda phobl i greu gwaith sy'n addysgu, yn hysbysu ac yn difyrru.

Caiff Laura ei hysbrydoli gan wahanol bersbectifau a dulliau o lunio lleoedd i greu ymgyrchoedd sydd yn dehongli sgyrsiau amserol, cyflwyno negeseuon sy'n ysgogi meddwl, annog dealltwriaeth, neu ond yn ceisio difyrru rhywun drwy ryngweithiadau cymdeithasol doniol.

Drwy waith sy'n archwilio unigrwydd mewn pobl hŷn a Men's Sheds, mae Laura'n ymddiddori mewn adeiladu a chydweithrediad cymunedol, ac mae'n awyddus i gyfathrebu â chynulleidfaoedd boed mawr neu fach.

PORTAL 2026 ✨Jonas Tew

Jonas Tew’s practice extends traditional ceramic processes into contemporary sculpture, exploring how materials carry the histories of the techniques that shape them. By using historic ceramic methods including wheel throwing, coil building, terra sigillata, and reduction firing, Jonas creates sculptural forms that challenge the boundaries between craft and sculpture.

Both the ceramic and aluminium elements begin as wheel-thrown conical forms. One is reduction fired to stoneware, while the other becomes an unfired clay mould, built through wheel throwing and coiling before being filled with molten aluminium. Once the mould is removed, the cast aluminium permanently retains every thrower's mark and coil imprint, preserving the physical history of ceramic making within an industrial material that no longer contains clay.

Through this process, his sculptures explore material agency, memory, and the evolving relationship between tradition and innovation.

Portal will be on display in Gallery 1 until Saturday 21 November

Mae ymarfer Jonas Tew yn estyn prosesau ceramig traddodiadol i gerflunwaith cyfoes, gan archwilio sut mae deunyddiau'n cario hanesion y technegau a'u lluniodd. Trwy ddefnyddio dulliau ceramig hanesyddol, yn cynnwys llunio ar droell, llunio torchau, terra sigillata a thanio rhydwythiad, mae Jonas yn creu ffurfiau cerfluniol sy'n herio'r ffiniau rhwng crefft a cherflunwaith.

Mae'r elfennau ceramig a'r rhai alwminiwm yn dechrau fel ffurfiau conigol wedi'u llunio â throell. Caiff un ei throi'n grochenwaith caled trwy danio rhydwythiad, tra bod y llall yn dod yn fowld clai heb ei danio, a gaiff ei llunio drwy daflu ar droell a thorchi cyn cael ei llenwi ag alwminiwm tawdd. Ar ôl tynnu’r mowld ymaith, mae'r alwminiwm bwrw yn dal pob gwasgnod torch a marc gan y taflwr am byth, gan ddiogelu hanes ffisegol gwneud cerameg o fewn defnydd diwydiannol nad yw bellach yn cynnwys clai.

Trwy'r broses hon, mae ei gerfluniau'n archwilio asiantaeth deunyddiau, atgof, a'r berthynas esblygol rhwng traddodiad ac arloesedd.

PORTAL 2026 ✨Jessica Theobald

Jessica Theobald is a glass and metal artist whose practice explores ideas of containment through wearable sculpture. Using blown glass and copper, she combines experimentation, processes, and learning through making to create work that balances fragility and strength.

This piece continues Jessica's exploration of containment, building on earlier ideas of chains and cages in a larger, wearable form. Made from blown glass and copper, it draws on Brutalist ideas of material honesty, industrial qualities, and structural forms.

The contrast between fragile glass and the weight and rigidity of copper creates a tension between vulnerability and restraint. Breath becomes part of the material, capturing the making process while creating a direct connection to the body. When static, the piece feels architectural and fixed in place. Once worn, it becomes an extension of the wearer, changing movement and encouraging a relationship between the body, the object, and wearing it.

Portal will be on display in Gallery 1 until Saturday 21 November

Mae Jessica Theobald yn artist gwydr a metel y mae ei hymarfer yn archwilio syniadau o gyfyngiant trwy gerflunwaith y gellir ei wisgo. Gan ddefnyddio gwydr chwyth a chopr, mae'n cyfuno arbrofi, prosesau a dysgu trwy wneud i greu gwaith sy'n cydbwyso eiddilwch a chryfder.

Mae'r darn hwn yn parhau ag archwiliad Jessica i gyfyngiant, gan adeiladu ar syniadau blaenorol o gadwynau a chaetsys mewn ffurf fwy, y gellir ei gwisgo. Gwnaed o wydr chwyth a chopr, ac mae'n tynnu ar syniadau Briwtalaidd am onestrwydd deunyddiau, rhinweddau diwydiannol a ffurfiau strwythurol.

Mae'r cyferbyniad rhwng gwydr bregus a phwysau ac anhyblygedd copr yn creu tyndra rhwng bregusrwydd ac ataliaeth. Mae anadl yn dod yn rhan o'r deunydd, gan gipio'r broses wneud a hefyd creu cysylltiad uniongyrchol â'r corff. Pan mae'n ddisymud, mae'r darn yn teimlo'n bensaernïol ac yn sefydlog yn ei le. Pan gaiff ei wisgo, mae'n dod yn estyniad o'r gwisgwr, gan newid symudiad ac ysgogi perthynas rhwng y corff, y gwrthrych, a'i wisgo.

PORTAL 2026 ✨ Iris Murray

Iris Murray is a Welsh artist currently based in South London. She primarily works with ceramics to make work that is illustrative and playful. Murray’s practice explores the relationship between queerness, nature and belonging. Asking questions around what is considered “natural” and “unnatural” and what that says about our ideals.

Her work is concerned with nature’s relationship to the body. We readily celebrate diversity in the natural world: variation in plant forms and rugged landscapes. Yet we often struggle to see that same diversity as beautiful within ourselves. She uses the tactility of ceramics to celebrate imperfection, highlighting cracked glazes and finger prints to showcase the beauty of diversity.

Portal will be on display in Gallery 1 until Saturday 21 November

Mae Iris yn artist Cymreig sy'n byw ar hyn o bryd yn Ne Llundain. Mae'n gweithio'n bennaf gyda cherameg gan wneud gwaith sy'n ddarluniadol ac yn chwareus. Mae ymarfer Murray yn archwilio'r berthynas rhwng bod yn gwiar, natur a pherthyn. Mae'n gofyn cwestiynau am yr hyn a ystyrir yn “naturiol” ac yn “annaturiol” a beth mae hyn yn ei ddweud am ein delfrydau.

Mae ei gwaith yn ymwneud â pherthynas natur â'r corff. Rydym yn gwbl fodlon dathlu amrywiaeth yn y byd naturiol: yr amrywiad mewn ffurfiau planhigion a thirweddau clogyrnog. Ond eto rydym yn ei chael hi’n anodd deall bod yr un amrywiaeth yn hardd ynom ni ein hunain. Mae'n defnyddio cyffyrddadwyedd cerameg i ddathlu amherffeithrwydd, gan amlygu gwydreddau wedi cracio ac olion bysedd i ddangos harddwch amrywiaeth.

We are incredible pleased to announce that we are one of the organisations to receive Art Capital Investment funding in the latest round from the Arts Council of Wales and Welsh Government!

Given the nature of our building, as a 19th-century manor house, we face many restrictions and challenges in terms of access, functionality, infrastructure, and environmental sustainability.

Over the next 6 months we will be working with our audiences and stakeholders through a feasibility study to investigate the possibilities of redeveloping and extending our building.

Having been part of the creative community of Cwmbran for the past 60 years we are looking forward to continuing to develop as a creative community hub over the next 60 years and beyond!

Rydym yn falch iawn o gyhoeddi ein bod yn un o'r sefydliadau a fydd yn derbyn cyllid Buddsoddiad Cyfalaf i’r Celfyddydau yn y rownd ddiweddaraf gan Gyngor Celfyddydau Cymru a Llywodraeth Cymru!

Oherwydd natur ein hadeilad, sef maenordy o'r 19eg ganrif, rydym yn wynebu llawer o gyfyngiadau a heriau o ran mynediad, ymarferoldeb, seilwaith a chynaliadwyedd amgylcheddol.

Dros y 6 mis nesaf, byddwn yn gweithio gyda'n cynulleidfaoedd a'n rhanddeiliaid trwy astudiaeth ddichonoldeb i ymchwilio i'r posibiliadau o ailddatblygu ac estyn ein hadeilad.

Gan i ni fod yn rhan o gymuned greadigol Cwmbrân ers 60 mlynedd, rydym yn edrych ymlaen at barhau i ddatblygu fel hyb cymunedol creadigol ar hyd y 60 mlynedd nesaf a thu hwnt!

PORTAL 2026 ✨ Iestyn Davies

Iestyn combines filmmaking, photography, and music to explore the ever-changing landscapes of South Wales. He specifically examines the environmental issues that face the land, while exploring Welsh folk traditions that are fading within communities. His work places the Welsh language at the forefront, exploring minority language, cinema, and cultural identity.

The film LLudw explores the Welsh tradition of Mari Lwyd, a ceremonial midwinter custom in which a decorated horse skull is carried from house to house, engaging in song and rhyming verses (pwnco), wishing to be welcomed in, bringing mischief and luck for the year.

Utilising Super 8's fragile materiality, the piece reflects the way customs fade, resurface, and rely on the landscape that shaped them. The short film and accompanying 35mm stills explore the relationship between memory and ritual, reflecting on the potential cultural impacts of losing such traditions.

Portal will be on display in Gallery 1 until Saturday 21 November

Mae Iestyn yn cyfuno gwneud ffilmiau, ffotograffiaeth a cherddoriaeth i archwilio tirweddau cyfnewidiol De Cymru. Yn benodol, mae'n ystyried y materion amgylcheddol sy'n wynebu'r wlad ac yn archwilio'r traddodiadau gwerin Cymreig sy'n diflannu mewn cymunedau. Mae ei waith yn gosod y Gymraeg yn y rheng flaen, gan archwilio iaith leiafrifol, sinema a hunaniaeth ddiwylliannol.

Mae'r ffilm Lludw yn archwilio traddodiad Cymreig y Fari Lwyd, sef arfer canol gaeaf seremonïol lle caiff penglog ceffyl addurnedig ei chludo o'r un tŷ i'r llall, gyda chanu a llunio cerddi odli (pwnco), yn y gobaith o gael eu croesawu i mewn a dod â drygioni a lwc am y flwyddyn.

Gan ddefnyddio materoliaeth fregus y Super 8, mae'r darn yn adlewyrchu'r ffordd y mae arferion yn pylu, yn ailgodi, ac yn ddibynnol ar y dirwedd a'u lluniodd. Mae'r ffilm fer a'r lluniau llonydd 35mm cysylltiedig yn archwilio'r berthynas rhwng y cof a defod, gan fyfyrio ar yr effeithiau diwylliannol posibl wrth golli'r cyfryw draddodiadau.
