Darlington Railway Preservation Society The DRPS houses and restores locomotives and railway artefacts with a connection to Darlington and the surrounding area. The D.R.P.S.

is home to a number of locomotives and Wagons that were built or worked in Darlington.The main steam loco is 78018 which was built at North Road Locomotive Works in 1954.

Run It Gala Visiting Locomotive Announcement! 🚂

For one weekend only on 17/18 October, we’re bringing a piece of lost local history back to life by recreating 1940s-built steam locomotive No. 68029... a full 63 years after the original was scrapped!

This special visitor has a huge connection to our line. Back in 1962, No. 68029 was hired by the National Coal Board to work on the famous Bowes Railway system, which we operate over a section of today at Marley Hill. We will also be marking the 200th anniversary of the historic Bowes line.

Thanks to our friends at Roger Hibbert Locomotive Collection CIO, identical surviving loco Robert (68067) is visiting Tanfield to assume No. 68029’s identity for the event.

No. 68029 will be joining all 6 of our operational home fleet steam locomotives for non-stop action across both days!

On this day in 1976, British Rail launched its new high-speed train (HST) service – the fastest diesel trains in the world - with a journey from Cardiff to London.

Powered by two diesel motors, the Inter-City 125 recorded a top speed of over 140mph in trial runs.

The introduction provided a regular high speed service between Cardiff, Bristol and London, and led to a surge in passenger numbers after some welcomed improvements to passenger comfort.

The carriages featured aircraft-like seating, with sliding electric doors at each end, and hot food served from an on-board kitchen with a "state-of-the-art" microwave oven.
