We were delighted to welcome our MP Caroline Voaden to the Museum on Tuesday. Caroline was impressed with the range of topics on display and pleased to meet so many volunteers - it helped her more fully understand Dartmouth's rich heritage and how's it shaped what we are today. Explore Dartmouth

On this 81st VE Day, let us not forget the service men and women who gave their lives for our freedom. And at this time in Dartmouth, we also remember the civillian men and women who died at Noss, on the river and in the town after the bombing raids of 1942 and 1943.

In Remembrance of all those brave US Servicemen who were lost in the early hours of the morning of 28th April 1944. Lest...

Next weekend - a historic WW 2 ship, exhibition at the Museum, talks at the Flavel - find out what happened in Dartmouth during WW2

27/04/2026

Dartmouth has a “secret” wartime history, and it’s about to be told. 🛥️

From 8-10 May, coinciding with the 81st anniversary of VE Day, the Coastal Forces Heritage Weekend brings to life the story of the fast boats, midnight raids, and covert missions that made Dartmouth one of the Royal Navy’s most daring bases during World War Two.

Here’s what’s on:

🎟️ Friday 8th May: Evening Talk at The Flavel, 5:30pm
Hear about the feared German E-boats, the secret 15th Flotilla running agents into Brittany, and the Free French Navy based right here in Kingswear. £15 includes a drink, or £20 for both Friday and Saturday talks.

🎟️ Saturday 9th May: Four Talks at The Flavel, 10:30am-3:30pm
From Motor Gun Boats built on the River Dart to HMS Medusa’s role on D-Day, an extraordinary day of local wartime history. £15, or £20 for both events.

🏛️ Dartmouth Museum: Naval and Secret Forces exhibition running all weekend. Adults £5, children free.

⚓ HMS Medusa: Step aboard the last operational Harbour Defence Motor Launch, moored on the Town Quay Jetty 11am-4pm daily. Free to board.

🚢 Kingswear: Take the ferry across and follow in the footsteps of Coastal Forces officers at HMS Cicala HQ and look out for the Blue Plaques on the memorial wall by the Lower Ferry.

A remarkable piece of history, right on our doorstep. Tickets are selling… don’t leave it too late. 🌊
