Cinderloo 1821 – 205 Years On

On 2nd February 2026, the 205th anniversary of the Cinderloo uprising , I’ve been finishing a paper exploring the importance of Cinderloo in Telford’s history—and how the Cinderloo 1821 project has helped bring this long‑forgotten story back to life.

The paper looks at the protest itself, its place in working‑class history, and how community action, walking, banners, art and memory have reclaimed Cinderloo as part of what Telford is today.

I’ve been greatly helped along the way by Roy Jones, who grew up in Horsehay and is an Emeritus Professor of (Historical) Geography in Perth, Western Australia, bringing both local memory and academic insight to the work.

If you’d like to review the paper before publication, please message me with your email address and I’ll be happy to share a draft.

As the Ironbridge Gorge Museums move into the care of the National Trust, the Cinderloo 1821 group welcomes the opportunity this presents to place working-class lives, struggles and stories at the heart of how we understand our industrial heritage. For too long, the focus of interpretation at Ironbridge has favoured the visionaries and owners—the Darbys, the engineers, the industrialists—while the everyday labour, hardship, resistance, and resilience of working people has remained underrepresented....

By Pete Jackson In the corner of a room in Blists Hill Victorian Museum, Telford, bold colours and embroidered conviction hang quietly on a wall. But the Shropshire and Telford Trades Union Council banner, with its vivid depictions of the 1821 Cinderloo Uprising, is anything but silent.Recently, I spoke with Mike Edwards from the Trades Council, who shared the background to the banner’s creation—how it came to be commissioned, who shaped its design, and why it remains such a powerful symbol of working-class resistance....

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Cinderloo Commemorative Walk yesterday — what a brilliant event it was!

Over 200 years on, the legacy of the Cinderloo Uprising continues to inspire. Yesterday’s walk marked the official opening of the Cinderloo Walking Route, now clearly marked with route stickers and accompanied by a beautifully produced leaflet by Amanda Hillier-Wiggins to help guide future visitors.

We were proud to be led around the route by the Telford & Shropshire Trades Council banner, with a diverse group of walkers including:
• Relatives of those involved in the 1821 protest
• Local councillors
• Trades unionists
• People from different locations along the walk route
• Members of the Cinderloo 1821 group, who helped organise the event
• A Hungarian family living in Telford, who discovered the story online
• And many others who came after reading about Cinderloo through social media, local history groups, and community networks.

A very special welcome went to Roy Jones ,who travelled all the way from Perth, Australia to be with us. Roy grew up in Horsehay and discovered the Cinderloo story online. He is now working with academics across six international sites on a book exploring the themes of heritage and protest, in which Cinderloo will proudly feature.

Together, we walked in the footsteps of history — and showed that the values of solidarity, justice and community are very much alive today.
