🥊 A little boxing mystery for you… can you guess who’s coming to the 1950’s Museum?

Our special guest is a former British professional heavyweight boxer who competed in the ring between 1973 and 1981.

During his career, he faced some well-known names in British boxing, including a fighter who won the British and Commonwealth Heavyweight titles, and an Olympic medallist from Bermuda! 🥊

🚗 Something a little different is rolling into the 1950’s Museum this Saturday!

We’re delighted to be welcoming the 2CV Car Club to the museum on Saturday afternoon!

The iconic Citroën 2CV is one of the most recognisable cars ever made, famous for its distinctive shape, canvas roll-back roof and wonderfully simple design.

First unveiled in 1948, the 2CV was designed to be an affordable, practical car for everyday life. More than 5 million were produced between 1949 and 1990, earning it a special place in motoring history. Often affectionately nicknamed the ‘Tin Snail’, it’s a car that has captured the hearts of generations of enthusiasts.

It’s always a treat to see classic cars bringing people together, and we’re looking forward to welcoming the club and seeing these characterful little cars in person.

A big thank you to everyone who has already taken the time to complete our community survey. We’ve received some really helpful and interesting feedback, and we’re very grateful to everyone who has shared their thoughts with us.

We’d love to hear from a few more people before we begin looking through the responses.

The 1950’s Museum is full of stories, memories, unusual objects, classic vehicles and fascinating pieces of the past. We’d like to know what the museum means to you and what you would like to see in the future.

🎸 Sparrow, The Rolling Stones & David Bailey’s Ferrari…

You really couldn’t make this stuff up! 😂

Sparrow tells us about his time in London during the swinging sixties — playing with Sparrow and the Gossamers, meeting Alexis Korner, and having The Rolling Stones come along to watch them play!

And then there’s the time he took David Bailey’s Ferrari for a spin… 🏎️

Our crime section features stories and objects connected to Ruth Ellis, the Profumo scandal and the Kray brothers — but sometimes the best history is hearing it directly from someone who was actually there.

🚗 TWO CAR CLUBS. ONE VERY BUSY WEEKEND! 🚗

A few weeks ago, the 1950’s Museum was buzzing with classic cars and car enthusiasts!

On the Friday, we welcomed the Hillman Imp Club, followed by the Austin Healey Car Club on the Sunday.

It was a brilliant weekend of fantastic cars, great people and plenty of nostalgia.

Earlier this summer, we welcomed Laura, a student from Norwich University of the Arts, who came to the museum looking for inspiration for her third-year animation project.

She was interested in the furniture, ornaments and styles of the 1950s and 60s — and now her finished animation has been nominated for an award!

Everything you see has been handmade, from the puppet and its clothing to the furniture.

Laura was made very welcome by Sparrow, and they had a good laugh while she was here too!

🌟 Meet the Team – Byron! 🌟

Today we’re introducing you to Byron, who has been volunteering with us at the 1950s Museum for around four years. ❤️

So, what does Byron like doing when he’s here?
🚗 Cleaning the cars!
And he’s definitely good at it! We recently had an old Vauxhall come into the museum and, within a day, Byron had it looking absolutely sparkling. ✨

It probably won’t surprise you to hear that Byron’s favourite car is our pink Cadillac. He’s always been a fan of American cars! 🇺🇸🚘

When we asked him what his favourite thing to see at the museum is, he said he loves looking at all the old objects, but his favourite area is the music section. 🎶

And why does he like coming to the museum?
“Everyone is friendly.” ❤️

We also asked Byron what visitors really shouldn’t miss — and his answer was easy:

💊 CAN YOU IMAGINE BUYING YOUR DEODORANT FROM A MACHINE?

Here’s another fascinating little piece of everyday history from the 1950’s Museum!

We have an old medicine dispensing machine, which offered people simple remedies and products at a time when everyday life looked very different.

Inside, you could find things like Aspro tablets for headaches, pain, colds and flu — and Amplex chlorophyll deodorant tablets, marketed for “personal freshness”! 😳

Yes… deodorant tablets that you swallowed!

It’s amazing what you discover in a museum — and even more amazing to think that people actually bought and used these products.

🧸 A trip to the toy cupboard… 1950s style! 🚂

We’ve got a brilliant collection of vintage toys at the 1950s Museum — and there’s plenty to spot!

From old favourites to toys that you might not recognise at all, our toy collection offers a little glimpse into what playtime looked like in the 1950s.

And let’s be honest… some of them are pretty cool even now!
