✨ SARAH MCCANN ✨
Clean Up At Number 10

The destruction brought by the COVID-19 pandemic was a collective experience, with strict regulations isolating families, friends, and loved ones — sometimes permanently. While many still grapple with the long lasting effects of this crisis, it emerged that those entrusted with leading us through these dark times had themselves violated the very rules they imposed. Clean Up At Number 10 created ahead of the 2024 election, stands as a stark reminder of the Conservative government’s abuse of power, granted by the people of the United Kingdom. This piece reflects the profound sense of betrayal and disappointment felt by the public, highlighting the failure of leadership at a time when protection and integrity was needed most.

✨ GEMMA MARMALADE ✨
Jingo Jango

This work critically considers the colonial British legacy in the Americas.

Made in the foothills of Mount Scorpion, Nevada, Jingo Jango – colloquially translating to ‘ridiculous patriotic war mongerer’ – seeks to critique the gestural, performative behaviours of both the ignorant tourist and the audacious colonizer as a homogenised caricature. It provides an experimental and problematic tackling of this burden with an attempted unshackling of a regrettable yet acknowledged ancestral history.

Made in technical collaboration with Fiona Middleton.

✨ TERESA FORDE ✨
Power

Power is one of a series of four collages exploring Wanda Maximoff’s (aka Scarlet Witch) journey within WandaVision. It explores the tensions between how grief and desire are manifested and the ways in which her world has been thwarted as she creates and then cedes control over a constructed reality known as the Hex.

The collages form part of a book chapter entitled ‘Where’s Wanda: Collage and Collapse’ by Teresa Forde in Entering the Multiverse: Perspectives on Alternate Universes and Parallel Worlds, edited by Paul Booth, to be published in November 2024 by Routledge

✨ ETHAN HALL ✨
Trapped in the Feed

This work specifically examines the intense relationship people often have with social media. The piece portrays digital confines, representing the complex and often consuming reliance many have on these platforms. In today’s digital age, this fixation and dependency on social media have become prevalent, reflecting a cyber issue that impacts mental health, social interaction, and self-perception in profound ways. By illustrating this form of digital entrapment, the work invites viewers to consider the personal and societal implications of social media addiction.

✨ DIANE BUSH ✨
Taking off the Gloves

My work is intended to confound, perplex, entertain, and inspire others to create. My targeted audience are young people, women, seniors, and underserved minorities of any ilk. My process has significantly changed over the years. Originally, I trained as a photographer using large, medium and small format black and white analog processes. In my later years I have felt more comfortable using recycled, repurposed or eco-friendly materials for a wide variety of two- and three-dimensional works that span a wide variety of alternative and experimental works that are heavily laced with humour, satire and whimsey.

November 2024 marks an important month in the world’s calendar. The outcome of the U.S. Presidential election has global-reaching ramifications and brings in to sharp focus issues related to liberty, freedom, visibility, and progress, as much as it reminds us of divisions, conflict, unrest, and regression. With reference to Hinduism, Viva El Vishnu wordplays ‘Elvis’ as the iconic American symbol, with Vishnu’s representation as a force of restoration and protection in the face of destructive chaos.

The exhibition represents work responding to these themes by both students and faculty from the University of Derby School of Arts in addition to internationally selected artists.

Jake Wall's current practices in photography focus specifically on his brother, Max. Max faces the challenges of special education needs as cerebral palsy, a condition that affects the functionality of his legs. As a result, he has had to make numerous compromises throughout his life to adapt and thrive, relying on a walker, undergoing surgery, and engaging in regular physiotherapy sessions. Despite these challenges, one of the few moments that brings him genuine relief is the liberating sensation of floating in bodies of water. This photograph captures one of those precious moments of tranquility, taken on a warm summer night at Osoyoos Lake in Canada. It encapsulates not just the beauty of the serene environment, but also the joy and freedom Max experiences as he momentarily escapes the limitations imposed by his condition, embracing the buoyancy of the water as a symbol of his resilience and spirit.
