Life during the 20th century is also included with the build up to the Civil Rights Movement and the impact of the Troubles. Painting the figure: Through the eyes of Degas, with Artist Sinéad Smyth

6th June 2-4pm, Strabane Library & Alley Theatre

Join us for workshop focused on painting and drawing the human figure through the lens of Edgar Degas (1834–1917).

Participants are invited to explore movement, gesture and observation, inspired by his iconic ballet dancers. Working from live models (clothed) and photographic references, participants can study how Degas captured fleeting moments rather than staged performances. Through guided exercises, participants experiment with layering, mark-making, and tonal contrast to convey the figure, developing an understanding of how Degas balanced realism with spontaneity.

The workshop encourages artists to see the figure not as a static subject, but as an ever-shifting presence shaped by light, motion, and perspective.

Participants and invited to bring a sketchbook, and some photographic references for their own use. Other materials: painting boards, acrylic paint, brushes and charcoal, will be provided.

See the printed artwork as part of the ‘Art on Your Doorstep’ trail at Strabane Library – Hilaire-Germain-Edgar Degas (1834 – 1917), Ballet Dancers, About 1890-1900

Derry’s shirt factories were powered by women – around 90% of the workforce - many leading the fight for union rights.

This May Day, we honour their legacy and the ongoing struggle for workers’ rights through a National Archives funded project Archives Revealed – Exploring the Shirt Factory Archives, bringing their voices back into the story.

They built strong communities, formed long lasting friendships, supporting one another through long hours, low pay and shared experiences.

Are you ready for one last trip through the Story of Derry?

Having closed its doors at the end of February, the Story of Derry exhibition is now preparing for its transition to the new DNA Museum at Ebrington. While an exciting new chapter lies ahead, we’re opening the doors one final time to give visitors a chance to say goodbye.

The exhibition traces the story of the city across thousands of years — from the earliest Neolithic settlers along the River Foyle, through the building of the iconic 17th-century walls and the Siege of 1689, to the defining social and cultural moments of the 20th century.

On Sunday 26th April, you’ll have a final opportunity to step inside, explore these stories, and experience the exhibition in all its depth before it closes for good.

Whether you’re returning for one last visit or finally making the trip, this is your chance to be part of the Story of Derry one final time.

Family historians across Ireland are eagerly awaiting the release of the 1926 Census; the first to be made freely available since the 1911 census, and a major milestone for anyone researching Irish ancestry. This long-anticipated publication is expected to open up new avenues for tracing families, understanding social history, and filling in gaps left by earlier records.

It’s important to note, however, that this release applies only to the 26 counties of what is now the Republic of Ireland. Unfortunately, the census returns for Northern Ireland were destroyed during the war effort, meaning that equivalent records for those six counties will not be available.

Meanwhile, the Tower Museum is actively working on digitising the Derry Almanacs as part of a wider archive initiative for the DNA Museum. These efforts aim to preserve and improve access to valuable local historical resources. Stay tuned for further updates, including news on how and when the 1926 Census will be accessible to the public.
