🎉 Happy 5th Birthday to Danum Gallery, Library and Museum! 🎉

Five years ago today, on 29 May 2021, the Danum opened its doors here in Doncaster, bringing together the gallery, library, museum and local collections under one roof.

To mark the occasion, I’ve restored and colourised the old photo they shared today, giving this brilliant Doncaster building a fresh look while still keeping that old historic feel. 📸✨

There’s something special about seeing familiar local places brought back to life like this. Buildings like the Danum carry so much of Doncaster’s story, and it’s great to see it being celebrated.

Full credit to Danum Gallery, Library and Museum for sharing the original image.

Join us on Wednesday 3 June at 1pm for our latest 10 Minute Talks! 😁

Doncaster’s position where the main north-south road crossed the Don at its lowest bridging point wasn’t always an advantage. During the Civil War the town put up with disruption, disease, and expense as soldiers of both sides came to Doncaster, often requiring billeting. This hastily written account was accepted by the corporation as an IOU for the expense of accommodating Scottish dragoons.

Free, no booking required. Donations welcome.

These shorter lunchtime talks by our curators are designed to give a bit more information about some of the amazing stories our collections hold.

Danum Gallery, Library and Museum is delighted to announce that it has recently acquired this amazing new artwork by acclaimed photographer Hannah Starkey.

The large-scale photograph entitled ‘Cath: A Woman’s Place is on the Picket Line’, was created to honour the role that women played both locally and nationally during the Miners’ Strike of 1984-85.

Central to the artwork is a portrait of Cath Whitehead, a resident of Denaby and an active participant in the Strike. Now in her mid-90s, Whitehead is remembered for her energy and commitment during the period.

Surrounding this intimate portrait is a layered photomontage incorporating archival press imagery of women from the Miners’ Strike, with the overall effect evoking a shifting interplay between personal memory and collective history.

Presented by the Contemporary Art Society through Valeria Napoleone XX CAS, 2025/26. This is an initiative supporting the acquisition of major works by women artists for UK museum collections each year.
