Newry and Mourne is back with another !

This week, we've had fun, frights and Freya!

We would like to thank for the giving audiences such an exciting talk on Eerieland which was full of ghost stories from the north of Ireland.

We would also like to thank for letting Freya come to the museum to teach the local schoolchildren on Viking life.

A great day with some great students!

A second successful day of trading for Freyja, at Bagenal’s Castle NMD Museums!

Today’s visitors were from Holy Cross PS and Windsor Hill Primary School - the children met with Freyja and learned more about her life and times. They learned the art of a shield wall, how to dress for battle, and handled a weapon or two, before finishing with a story of Odin…

It was a good day for Freyja too! She traded an ear spoon and one calf for not one but two thralls!

W.J. Barre: Newry Architect
Join architectural historian Gerry Ward for an engaging talk exploring the brief yet prolific career of Victorian architect William Joseph Barre (1830–1867).

Born in Newry, Barre initially focused on local landmarks such as Hill Street Unitarian Church and Riverside Presbyterian Church before moving to Belfast, where he won prestigious commissions for the Albert Memorial Clock Tower and the Ulster Hall. Recognized as one of the most renowned architects of his day, he served as a Council Member on the Board of the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland before his untimely death at just 37.

About the Speaker:

Gerry Ward is an architectural historian specializing in the builders of Belfast and beyond, with extensive published work on prominent architects including Sir Charles Lanyon and WJ Barre. He is a member of the Ulster Architectural Heritage Society and currently serves as Vice-Chair of the West Belfast Historical Society.

This talk is organized in partnership with the Old Newry Society.
