A visit to St Michael's Churchyard will take you to the Burns Mausoleum — the final resting place of Robert Burns.

The mausoleum is open at set times through the day (usually 11.15am and 2.15pm), with museum staff on hand to welcome visitors inside.

It’s a striking memorial to stop at for a moment and pay your respects.

Well worth including as part of a wander round Dumfries.

Home to a fantastic independent cinema and a museum focused on Burns' life in the town. It is situated on the banks of the beautiful River Nith in a former watermill where we also hold cultural and historical events such as Dumfries Burns Club's annual Poet in Residence evening and this weekend's Archaeology Scotland conference.

A Sunday in Dumfries offers the chance to spend a while, following Burns’ story through the places connected with him.

From the river to the churchyard, and the streets in between, there’s plenty to take in at your own pace, with time to pause along the way.

Where would you wander first?

Although his final home and final resting place are known as Robert Burns House and Burns Mausoleum, we shouldn't forget that they were also his wife Jean's home and that the Mausoleum is also where she was laid to rest.
Jean actually lived in the house a lot longer than Burns and was well known in Dumfries. One of the reasons Robert is so well remembered and commemorated in the town is because of Jean and the Burns children.
This letter was sent out by Robert Burns Junior on the occasion of his mother's death and internment.
You can visit Robert and Jean's house for free Monday to Saturday 10-5 and Sundays 2-5. The Mausoleum is also open and available to visit Monday to Saturday at 11.15 and 2.15.
