Globe Inn Close sits just off Dumfries High Street.

Closes like this were woven into everyday life in the town — people coming and going, voices carrying, business being done. Burns would have been part of it all, making his way between the High Street and The Globe.

Turn into it, and The Globe stands there ahead of you, lights on, ready to welcome whoever happens by — an inviting sight, much as it must have been for generations.

You can’t help but wonder about the characters and conversations that have taken place here.

Set within St Michael’s Churchyard, the Burns Mausoleum marks the final resting place of Robert Burns.

He was first buried in a modest grave nearby, before being moved here in 1817. It remains one of the most recognisable landmarks in his Dumfries.

From here, it’s only a short walk to the streets and places he knew so well. Take a wander and see what you come across.

There’s a real sense of warmth and history as you cross the threshold at the Globe Inn—you can feel it.

It's the kind of place that invites you to cast your mind back—to evenings of conversation, debate, and a good deal of laughter.

Robert Burns was very much part of that life here in Dumfries. Townsfolk would gather to hear him read the news, and before long it became something people looked forward to.

The rooms would fill quickly, voices rising with anticipation as he was about to begin. Others would gather at the door and windows, trying to catch a glimpse and follow what they could from outside.

Each room retains its own unique atmosphere, but the Burns Room in particular feels like the heart of it all.

I’d be interested to hear—do you have a favourite room or space when you visit the Globe?

'Nursing her wrath to keep it warm…'

Kate — waiting for Tam, positively simmering — is one of the most memorable moments from Tam o’ Shanter, and a fine example of Robert Burns’s understanding of human nature — something many of us might recognise.

On the Rabbie, Tam and Ghosts of The Globe Inn tour, we explore that side of Burns a little more closely, here in the rooms of his favourite howff.

Alongside the tale of Tam, there are other stories connected to The Globe — some part of its history, others not so easily explained, with a touch of folklore woven through.

Beginning in May, these evenings run on the first Tuesday of each month through to September.

I look forward to welcoming you to The Globe.
