Jane Haining is recognised in a renewed section of the Auschwitz Birkenau Memorial and Museum's main exhibition - devoted to hundreds of prisoners for whom no registration photographs were taken.

Haining died in the Holocaust after refusing to abandon Jewish children in her care.

The new name plaques adorn the wall of a long corridor and are displayed next to many images of prisoners dressed in striped shirts with shaved heads.

It was an important day in the Dunscore School calendar today as it was the annual prize giving. One of the main awards is the Jane Haining Award which is presented to a pupil that shows outstanding citizenship, community awareness and care for others. This year's recipient was Cameron Hodge. Congratulations Cameron!

One of many versions that are in the press this week of the story of Duncan McFarlane whose bible will be on display tomorrow (Sunday) from 2:00 pm in the heritage centre. If you want to read other versions, just Google Duncan McFarlane, Dunscore, Bible... There will be a short ceremony when Jo Abbott will hand over the bible and other items from her grandfather to the heritage centre for display for this season before they go to the Gordon Highlanders museum.

You can see the bible in the heritage centre from this Sunday. There will be a ceremony at 2:00 pm this Sunday to hand over the items to be exhibited in the heritage centre for the rest of this season. The centre is open every Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.

Duncan MacFarlane was carrying the bible in his breast pocket when he was shot during WW1.

The Dunscore Heritage Centre is open again for the season. Please come in any Sunday from 2:00 – 4:00 pm. There is so much of interest to see relating to the life of Jane Haining, Dunscore village history and about Dunscore Church. There is always a warm welcome with tea, coffee and baking.

New for this year only, we are hosting a very special temporary exhibit. Duncan MacFarlane, the grandfather of Dunscore resident Jo Abbot, served and was very badly injured in the First World War. The fact that he survived his injuries is believed to be because he had his bible in his breast pocket and, while he suffered several bullet wounds, the one that would most likely have been fatal hit his bible. A truly remarkable story.

On Sunday 19 April at 2:00 pm, there will be a small ceremony for Jo to hand over the bible and associated items to be exhibited for the season in the heritage centre. There will be a piper and representatives from his regiment, the Gordon Highlanders. You are invited to join us too and you will be able to see the bible, his “dog tag”, medals and other items relating to Private McFarlane.
The temporary exhibit will then be on display in the heritage centre for the rest of this season and will then be exhibited in the regimental museum.
