An interesting image here and one we don't have a lot of details for. The place is Upper Station Road, one of the old Dunfermline streets that no longer exists. It was off James Street, roughly where the entrance to the carpark is today. The company was W. Smith Lesslie, Wholesale Fruit and Potato Salesmen, a business that began in Kirkcaldy and later opened branches in Dunfermline and Cowdenbeath. We've got the company listed at these premises in our Fife Trade Directories between the 1930s and 1960 but prior to that, the company was based in Carnegie Street.

Corn in the Ear 1887 by William McTaggart RSA (1835-1910)

A beautiful work featuring children relaxing on the edge of a sunlit cornfield. Autumn was McTaggart’s favourite season and there are many paintings, including others in our own collection, that feature ripe, golden fields of corn, rippling in the breeze.

This is just one of the paintings on show in our latest exhibition, Living Colour: Celebrating 200 Years of the RSA. Drawn from OnFife’s collections, the exhibition features works by leading Royal Scottish Academicians, including Elizabeth Blackadder RSA, John Houston, Anne Redpath, William Gillies, William McTaggart RSA, and the Scottish Colourists, among others.

Living Colour: Celebrating 200 Years of the RSA is open daily until 25 April. Entrance is free.

The Autumn holidays are here and that means it's time for the next HQ Past-Port Explorer programme to begin. The theme is Picture This and it ties in with RSA200, marking 200 years of the Royal Scottish Academy. Visit us here at DCLG to take part in one stage of the challenge, then visit our friends at the Abbey Church of Dunfermline, Dunfermline Abbey Nave and the Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Musuem to complete their activities.

It's up to you whether you visit each venue in one day or over several and, best of all, it's free to participate. You can Pick up a Past-Port and begin the challenge at any of the four venues and remember to get it stamped after each activity

It’s , and this year’s theme - ‘Honouring Our Communities’ - invites us to consider whose stories we tell, whose contributions we celebrate and whose voices we might overlook.

To mark the month, we’re celebrating all the stories, journeys and communities that have shaped Black Britain. Libraries are a great place for remembrance and discovery, so we’ve brought together a selection of titles from our collections that spotlight Black voices, experiences and histories.

Last Saturday, we were pleased to co-host the day-long ‘Dunfermline Red Shoes Festival: Remembering Moira Shearer’ with Peacock Cinema, as part of ONFife’s centenary celebrations of Moira Shearer’s life and achievements.

Born in Dunfermline in 1926, Moira Shearer is best known for her iconic role as Victoria in the 1948 film The Red Shoes.

Thanks to a recent generous donation, we now have a new Moira Shearer display in our Reading Room. Items include books, concert tickets, photographs and theatre programmes.

The display is available to view until Friday 23 October.

Entrance is free.

Our newest art exhibition, 'Living Colour', opens this Saturday 3 October.

Celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Royal Scottish Academy, the exhibition explores Scottish art from the 19th to the 21st century, bringing together works by artists with various connections to Scotland - including many who were born in Fife or have strong and lasting links to our local area.

Among the artists featured are Elizabeth Blackadder RSA, John Houston and Peter Graham HRSA. Pictured above is Graham’s 1906 painting Morning, which may have been inspired by the rugged beauty of the St Andrews coastline.

Come along and join us, no booking required. Kids are welcome too.
