What a busy day at the museum on Wednesday. Members of the U3A Basildon and Billericay Group paid us a visit alongside other visitors including members from the Wethersfield History Group.
A condensed tour of the Atlas Works was conducted by John Stedman for the U3A group between the rain showers while Mark Claydon held the fort at the museum. It was a full house in excess of 17 people, standing room only! Have you visited us yet? Thanks to all the volunteers involved.

All set up for a VE Day talk to 20+ residents at Colne House Care Home. We've had a lovely day!

The Union Flag has been flying all week for today, the 81st anniversary of VE Day. The Union Flag, or Union Jack, was created in 1606 by King James I to unite the flags of England (St George’s Cross) and Scotland (St Andrew’s Cross). It was updated in 1801 to incorporate the Cross of St Patrick for Ireland, forming the current design. It symbolizes the United Kingdom and originated as a maritime royal flag.

There's certainly a French theme to the village this week! The shops and houses have got the bunting out, the church is flying the French Tricolor and yesterday the Museum welcomed 20+ of the Nonancourt visitors to its doors for a brief talk with John Stedman, and to look at the storyboards in the Atlas Community Gardens where also stands the Blue Cedar tree that was planted 20 years ago to commemorate 30 years of twinning. Anyone interested in the Twinning Association, head on over to their page

Happy St George's Day! St George’s Day is celebrated on 23 April each year as the feast day of St George, England’s patron saint, honouring his legacy as a Christian martyr and the legendary dragon‑slayer.
St George’s Day marks the traditionally accepted date of St George’s death during the Diocletianic persecution of Christians in the early 4th century.
St George is believed to have been a Christian Roman soldier from Cappadocia (modern Turkey) who was executed for refusing to renounce his faith.
He became England’s patron saint around the mid‑14th century and remains a national symbol of courage and chivalry.

Tomorrow, many will be wishing to walk off their Christmas meals! Attached is a copy of a booklet "𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐑𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬" written just around 40 years ago by Vernon Clarke, then President of the now-defunct Earls Colne Society. A prolific author, it is a detailed and informative guide to the rivers and brooks connected to the Four Colnes and may be of interest to those wishing to explore & see what has changed in the last 40 years!
