Edinburgh Printmakers

Edinburgh Printmakers Edinburgh Printmakers is a centre for printmaking and the visual arts in Fountainbridge. It’s also home to one of the largest printmaking studio in Europe.

Edinburgh Printmakers is set in Castle Mills, a beautiful heritage building that used to be a rubber factory and a brewery complex. Castle Mills houses two galleries, with a changing programme of contemporary visual art exhibitions. It’s open to anyone who would like to join a course or become a member. It was established in 1967 as the first open-access studio in Britain. We provide space, expert

We have a distinctive offer for printmakers and has developmental opportunities for both artists and the creative industries, supporting learning, production, presentation and exchange that will have a significant impact on their practice and profile. The gallery shop sells original prints and design-led handmade products, by artists in residence and providing a key outlet for Scotland-based artists and printmakers. Castle Mills has spaces for hire including a large board room seating up to 60 auditorium style, and a smaller room for meetings and events. It also has a learning studio for schools and groups up to 35 people, that can be hired by the community for learning activities and workshops. Our Creative Industries Hub has seven studios for creative use at Castle Mills, including art, architecture design and Craft Scotland. Edinburgh Printmakers also provides low-cost spaces for creative use across Scotland, with EP Spaces. The onsite café is a beautiful and vibrant space that makes the perfect place to enjoy delicious seasonal dishes and home-baked goods, inside or in the courtyard. Edinburgh Printmakers works in partnership with various organisations including UnLtd Scotland. RSA200: Celebrating Together

In line with the opening of the Venice Biennale this month we’ve chosen to look back at 'I Heart Scotland' by Rachel Maclean RSA (elect), an exhibition we toured back in 2014 commissioned by and in partnership with Edinburgh Printmakers. Responding to the referendum on Scottish independence at that time, the show explored a sense of both power and absurdity within representations of Scottish and British national pride.

Travelling Gallery made a visit to Rachel’s High School as well as introducing her work to audiences across the country. Rachel went on to represent Scotland at the Venice Biennale in 2017 and rapidly established herself as a distinctive creative voice creating baroque, hyper-real worlds using green-screen video technology and computer animation.

This year the Royal Scottish Academy celebrates its 200th anniversary with RSA200: Celebrating Together. As part of the celebrations we are doing a monthly deep dive into our exhibition archive and look back at a number of the RSA’s Academicians and Alumni who have exhibited with the Travelling Gallery.

Stone Lithography Expanded Practice
Saturday 18 July - Monday 20 July (3 days)

https://f.mtr.cool/xyydgyiavl

This course gives a comprehensive introduction to stone lithography, and is suitable for people without previous lithography experience or for those wishing to refresh their skills. Emphasis is given to stone lithography as a drawing and painting medium, working directly on this wonderful robust drawing surface. Learn how to paint with water-tusche washes, achieving the astonishing 'reticulated washes' peculiar to stone lithography.

Initially focusing on learning the process and working in monochrome, we will explore traditional approaches to mark-making using tusche crayon and wash as well as alternative drawing methods. Learn all about processing of images on stone and how to stabilise the image for printing before taking a number of prints to show the development of your drawing at different stages.

Move on to look at how to add additional colours to produce layered colour prints.
