This latest exhibition explores the art of texture, featuring the distinct perspectives of three artists: Linda Park, Alison Cowan and Avril Scott.

‘Beyond the Surface’ treats paint as a tactile force, demonstrating how the medium can be pushed to its physical limits to reshape our perception of a space. By moving away from the flat canvas, these artists explore the structural potential of paint - transforming it from just a visual layer into a tangible, three-dimensional experience that challenges our understanding of what a painting can be.

Lewis MacKenzie is a contemporary impressionist painter based near Glasgow. His work features in numerous private collections and has appeared in exhibitions by the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, The Royal Glasgow Institute and the Paisley Art Institute, as well as in several private art galleries in Glasgow, Edinburgh and London.

Most recently, he has appeared on Sky Portrait Artist of the Year, been shortlisted for the Inaugural Scottish Landscape Awards (2023), and was awarded the Murray and McGregor Prize at the Scottish Prize for Fine Art (2023).

An art school drop-out, Lewis trained as a biologist and worked for several years in a cancer lab before rekindling his life-long love of drawing and painting in the early 2010s. He draws influences from the masters of past eras, such as Velázquez, Vermeer, Guthrie, Sargent, and the Boston School Impressionists. His interests range from portraiture to still life and landscape.

Iain Holman is a Scottish portrait and figurative artist, born in Inverness and now working from his studio in the town of Biggar, South Lanarkshire. He graduated with a Masters Degree in Fine Art from the Open College of the Arts (UCA) in 2016, and is now exhibiting in selected galleries in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stirling and Dublin. His work was also on show at the Mall Galleries in London and he has appeared in a number of art publications including the International Artist Magazine.

Iain’s inspiration comes from the enduring fascination with the human form, sourcing his references from either studio created poses or candid images from everyday life. He blends realism with abstraction, using oils on canvas to create painted patterned brush work, that is both structured and immediate. His inspiration is found around him and is of the moment; reacting to the time he is living in today and recording his experiences as a visual diary.

Join us for of our new exhibition ‘The Observed Life’, showing from Saturday 25th April. This double feature show demonstrates the art of watching, pairing the atmospheric, large-scale works of Iain Holman with the precise, luminous still lifes of Lewis Mackenzie. One captures the world in motion - the other captures the view in stillness.

Introducing Lynton Parmar-Hemsley,

Lynton Parmar-Hemsley’s work transcends photorealism, capturing a distinct energy that eludes the camera lens. A full-time artist for over 30 years, Lynton began his career as a commercial illustrator before shifting his focus to figure and landscape painting.

He has achieved significant acclaim as a portrait artist, securing high-profile commissions – most notably a portrait of Barbara Bush for the Bush family in the U.S. His talent has also been showcased on a national stage, appearing on Sky Arts’ Portrait Artist of the Year.

Lynton quickly realised that absolute realism can sometimes be a barrier to truth. Moving beyond the “perfect” image, he discovered he could paint the atmosphere of a room or the weight of a person’s thoughts. This gives his work its signature vibration; the brushstrokes are visible, the energy is palpable and the soul of the subject remains the focus.

You can view Lynton’s work in our latest exhibition, Fleeting Glimpses, currently showing at the gallery!

Introducing Tony Griffin,

Born in Glasgow in 1963, Tony Griffin spent many years working as an electrician in Scotland and Canada before pursuing his true passion: painting, which he turned into his main career.

Tony studied for two years at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto from 1994 to 1996, under the guidance of the renowned Canadian painter Graham Coughtry. In 1997, he returned to Glasgow to further his artistic education at the Glasgow School of Art, where he learned from Sandy Moffat, Robin Hume, Stuart McKenzie, and Callum Innes, ultimately graduating with a BA Hons in Fine Art.

In recent years, Tony has defined his style, stating that he has gravitated back toward a more painterly impressionistic approach. This perfectly complements his preferred subjects of cityscape and landscape paintings. Utilising oil for it’s versatility on canvas and board, Tony aims to capture the colour, tone and light of the landscapes and built environments that inspire him. While his work is contemporary, it is deeply influenced by the Scottish Colourists and the broader European tradition.

We are delighted to have Tony join our gallery; you can view his work in it’s entirety in our new exhibition ‘Fleeting Glimpses’, currently showing...
