We are delighted to announce that Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design graduate Fay Cardigan has received the 2026 RSA Barns-Graham Travel Award!🎉

Fay plans to use the £2,000 funds to travel to Faenza, Italy, where she will explore contemporary ceramics. What a wonderful time we had at our 200th birthday party!

It was a jam-packed day of artists talks, getting creative, learning all about Celebrating Together and the RSA Friends – and we think it’s safe to say we put the ‘art’ in party hats! We’d like to thank everyone who joined us yesterday, and anyone who has supported the Royal Scottish Academy, our visitors, artists, Academicians, partners, donors and Friends. Your support enables us to continue championing contemporary art and architecture through exhibitions, awards, residencies and opportunities for artists at every stage of their careers.

❤️If you would like to help support the next chapter of the RSA, please consider making a donation to our bicentenary programme. Every contribution helps us continue supporting creativity in Scotland for generations to come.

John Houston and Elizabeth Blackadder worked as lecturers at Edinburgh College of Art, and the long university holidays enabled the couple to travel. They made their first visit to Japan in 1985, and the country had a huge impact on both artists’ work.

Houston portrayed the world not as he saw it, but as he felt it. Inspired by Kyoto’s bamboo groves and atmospheric Zen gardens, his Japanese paintings and prints became deeply personal visualisations of memory.

Discover how Japan shaped Houston’s work, his collaborations with Glasgow Print Studio and the lasting legacy he shared with Elizabeth Blackadder RSA in our latest blog post exploring Houston in Japan. Plus, several of the works featured are currently on display in the Academicians’ Gallery as part of Far Afield, our new exhibition celebrating the enduring relationship between travel and artistic practice.

We’re delighted to announce Steven MacIver as the inaugural recipient of the £5,000 RSA David McClure Centenary Travel Award at the 200th Annual Exhibition.

Funded by the family of David McClure RSA in celebration of the centenary of his birth, this new award supports an artist to undertake a period of European travel for research, development and the creation of new work. MacIver received the award for his painting Twenty-Eight Years Later, which highlights two stadiums that are connected by the Scotland vs Brazil fixtures at the 1998 and 2026 FIFA World Cups. The work reflects on time, memory and personal and collective history.

David McClure RSA’s own practice was shaped by travel, with scholarship-supported journeys across Europe playing a lasting role in the development of his career.
