Originally from Dorset, Peter Foyle studied at St. Martin’s School of Art, graduating in 1986. The same year he was a finalist for the Reader’s Digest Young Illustrator’s Award and he went on to a successful career as a freelance artist and illustrator until 1990 when he and his wife opened the Framework Gallery in Troon, Ayrshire, where he still lives and works to this day.

A great deal of Peter’s work takes its inspiration from his travels around the Mediterranean, from the sparkling light of Venetian waters to the sun-dappled cafes of Provence. However Peter is just as comfortable painting the rugged Ayrshire Coastline, an Edinburgh cityscape or a still life set-up in his studio. His confident and adaptable style has earned him a number of prizes including the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians Award at the Royal Glasgow Institute.

We’re delighted to have some new paintings in the gallery from Luci McLaren.

Her work has always been dominated by colour and movement, seeking to capture a moment in time, a feeling, the essence of someone or something. The effect is striking, powerful and dynamic; both alive with movement and given space to breathe. Luci works mostly on raw linen as she loves the simple and natural way it works and sits with thick oil paint.

You can see Luci’s paintings in the gallery and online via our website now.

With a love for flowers and all things botanical, Hedi Munro was also inspired by her time living in South East Asia where she started to incorporate gold leaf into her paintings.

Talking about the use of gold, Hedi says 'People are naturally drawn to gold, there is something inherently appealing about its magical glow and how it is forever changing. In my work I use it to create contrast; it emphasise the positive and negative shape in my paintings and adds an element of unpredictability. Different aspects of the piece are brought to the viewer’s focus as light plays over the surface.'

Our current exhibition includes two of Hedi’s new paintings which you can view in the gallery and online via our website now.

We’re delighted to have some wonderful new paintings from Jennifer Irvine RGI RSW in our mixed May exhibition.

Scottish artist Jennifer studied at Glasgow School of Art in the mid-seventies before moving into a career in teaching. She began painting full time in 1990 and has since won awards including The David Cargill Award, The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Award and The Sir William Gillies Award.

Inspired by her trips to France, Spain and Italy, Jennifer has a great interest in depicting the nuances of light and shade. She draws on the way sunlight interacts with its surroundings; considering how it falls on the ornate facade of a building in Provence, and the way it reflects on the sparkling surface of a Venetian waterway.
Beginning with a loose, expressive underdrawing, Jennifer uses brushes and palette knives to block in elements of the composition, building up layers of vibrant colour and tone that retain an uncanny realism and palpable sense of place.

The exhibition continues in the gallery and online until 31st May 2026.

Based in Stroud, Adrian Bates worked in the field of graphic design for a number of years but felt stifled by the lack of self expression and creative freedom in his role. It was after a short sabbatical that he ventured into a new role as a Craft tutor, giving Adrian a chance to immerse himself in a variety of tactile working methods which would eventually lead to him becoming a full time artist in 2012.

He states that his work seeks to explore the relationship between inner space and outer form; where they meet and merge one into the other. This sprang from an interest in typography and calligraphy but extends to all organic forms.

Throwing and hand-building his pieces from black and white stoneware clays, Adrian displays an inherent understanding of structure and form his work managing to simultaneously fool and dazzle the eye of the viewer.

You can see new work from Adrian in the gallery and online now.

A painter of brilliant light with a unique flamboyant style, Peter Graham works both in his home studio and in plein air, both in the Hebrides and the Mediterranean, capturing the essence of his subject with brushstrokes full of rich colour.

Influenced equally by the Scottish Colourists and the French Impressionists, Peter’s paintings have held an impressive presence on the British art scene for over 30 years. He is an elected member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, ROI, and the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour, RSW. Peter has also served for a period as Vice President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, London.

Simon Laurie draws inspiration from the work of the Modern British movement, a group of artists predominantly based in St Ives, Cornwall. He particularly admires the work of Alfred Wallis, whose flattened perspectives and stylised imagery inform Simon’s still life work.

Wallis was a retired mariner and owner of a marine store who had only taken up painting aged 70 and was entirely untaught. He drew his inspirations from maritime events he had witnessed or places visited whilst a sailor, and the ships and harbour of the town. Wallis’s naive style was admired by Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood, and the Tate curator Jim Ede - champion of the British avant garde movement.

SImon’s paintings feature in our mixed May Exhibition which runs in the gallery and online until the end of this month.

Peter Wileman FROI RSMA FRSA is the former President and a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, a Member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists , the East Anglian Group of Marine Artists and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He has worked in the field of art and design for over forty years.

His style is bold and vigorous, both in the use of colour and handling of paint, as he explores the effect of light on his subject. Seeking atmosphere through light and colour, he works in varying degrees of abstraction.

Peter has won many awards for his paintings including: The Frank Herring Award in 2000; The Cornelissen & Son Award in 2003 ; The Clerc Fowle gold medal in 2006; The DAS Prize in 2007, The Charles Pears Award and The Stanley Grimm Prize in 2010, The Dartington Crystal Chalice in 2012 and The Stanley Grimm Prize in 2021.
