EMBASSY Gallery Annual General Meeting ~ 13.01.2026 ~ 18:30-20:00 ~ 7 Ferry Road, EH6 4AD

Calling all EMBASSY Members! Our Annual General Meeting is happening on Tuesday 13th January, 18:30-20:00, and we want to hear from you! The AGM is a chance to have your say in the future of EMBASSY, as well as to meet the other members and learn more about our forward programming. We’ll reflect on the year that has just passed and try to give you an insight into EMBASSY’s current position.

In 2026, we will be creating more opportunities for members to engage with at EMBASSY, such as monthly Members’ Crits and regular Members’ Socials. However, at the AGM we’re really keen to hear what you would like from EMBASSY as members. We’d love to hear your ideas about how we can get the members more involved and build a stronger community around EMBASSY. The membership base has been such an important part of how EMBASSY has operated over the last 20+ years, and as we move into 2026 we’re looking to work towards a membership structure that works for you.

You can sign to become a member by clicking on the ‘Membership’ tab on our website. Memberships start from as little as £2/year, and new members are absolutely welcome to attend the AGM and suggest their ideas!

If you are a member but unable to attend the AGM on January 13th, please do email us with any thoughts and questions and we’ll take them into consideration for the discussion.

Scheherazade in the Land of Birds is an exhibition by Yara Kamleh and Amélie Wisniewska-Sadok celebrating Tatreez, a Palestinian-style of cross stitch, as a medium for storytelling and resistance. Combining Tatreez and photography, tradition and modernity, they present the experience of female Palestinian diaspora and protest action in Edinburgh.

This exhibition is a part of Embassy’s Community Takeover programme, which members are invited to submit proposals for. Community Takeovers are exhibitions, events, talks and workshops facilitated by our members in our space. If you are looking for a gallery to host an exhibition you’ve been planning, a room to run a reading group in or a venue for a talk or performance, consider applying for a Community Takeover with us. (Please read the information available on our website before applying)

Members’ Crit ~ 08.01.2026 ~ 18:30-20:30 ~ 7 Ferry Road, EH6 4AD

Looking for advice on a project? Recently finished a piece and keen to hear what others think? On Thursday 8th January, 18:30-20:30, EMBASSY will be hosting the first in a series of monthly Members’ Crits. These events will give EMBASSY members a chance to share artworks, completed or in progress, with other artists and gather responses and constructive feedback. There will be 5 spaces to present each session, and the presenting artists can decide on the kind of feedback they would find useful. You can read more about the Members’ Crits and reserve a space at January’s session by following the link in our bio.

Members’ Crits are only open to EMBASSY Members! You can become a member for as little as £2 a year by looking for the Membership section on our website. Make sure your subscription is active before reserving a space (if you are unsure, do get in touch to confirm). Members are an essential part of EMBASSY’s mission to cultivate emerging contemporary art in Edinburgh and by signing up you will be supporting us to continue our programme. Becoming a member is a great way to meet other artists and art workers in Edinburgh, and you’ll be eligible for a range of perks listed on our website.

This event is in person and takes place in our space at 7 Ferry Road, Edinburgh, EH6 4AD. It is important to only book a ticket if you are sure you can make it as spaces are very limited. If you have a space reserved but can no longer attend, please get in touch with us and cancel your booking so that we can offer your space to someone else.

This is the last round of artists selected for Biscuit Tin, our annual moving image festival. Films will be shown at the premiere this 𝐒𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝟏𝟑𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫, 𝟕-𝟗𝐩𝐦. Tickets are free and available in our bio! 🍪

𝐌𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐝 𝐊𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐣 (born in Cambridge, 1997) is a moving image artist currently based in Glasgow. Mourad comes from a mixed heritage background of Syrian and Argentine and much of his work touches on themes of the shared space we all inhabit and how this links to memory and identity. His approach is curious and open minded, relying on a playfulness that incorporates a variety of techniques including collage, animation, analogue film and writing. He has recently completed an experimental film course in Madrid called MasterLAV with a particular focus on 16mm film.

𝐙𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐚 𝐋𝐚𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 has a stubbornly hopeful view of the world. He makes work that desperately tries to prove the existence of magic in the mundane and settles for no less than his audience’s undivided acceptance. This boyish energy is hollow; throughout Zappa’s practice, there are echoes of his self-doubt and uncertainty. Frothing at the edges of his badly-made constructions are glimpses of his desire to emotionally engage with his family and memories that spread across a wider shared experience. He makes silly objects and performs them to map the constructed limits of his existence.

𝐙𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐲𝐚𝐨 𝐖𝐚𝐧𝐠(b. 1996, Harbin) is an artist and designer based in Beijing. Working across digital video, installation, and text, she explores perception, materiality, and the boundary between reality and fiction. Her work has shown internationally and was shortlisted for the 2025 Lumen Prize.
𝐊𝐞𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐪𝐮𝐡𝐚𝐫 (b. 1969, Edinburgh) lives and works in Edinburgh. Farquhar’s work engages with everyday objects, materials, and technological processes. Overlooked cultural signifiers echo the ambient hum of contemporary life, offering clues to activities undertaken or observed first-hand. He questions what is deemed suitable for artistic use - often embracing the banal and reviled to unsettle assumptions of value.

Over the next few days we will be announcing the artists selected for Biscuit Tin, our annual moving image festival. Films will be shown at the premiere on Saturday 13th December, 7-9pm. Tickets are free and available through the link in our bio.

This 𝐓𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 (tomorrow!) we will also be running a free 𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 with artist Holly Summerson, bring your own films (BYOF) or we will provide some for you so you can learn this hugely valuable skill. Tickets also available above.

𝐋𝐨𝐬 𝐌á𝐬 𝐀𝐠𝐮𝐚 is an estranged collective of (maybe) only one person. Their name, incomprehensible even to those who speak Spanish, evokes a certain fluidity; even some degree of playfulness with nostalgia. And it is precisely these two aspects that their work aspires to reach. They can be seen around Barcelona, Berlin or Belgrade, but never in an Anglo-speaking city (perhaps with the exception of Belfast).

𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐮𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧 is an artist based in Glasgow who commits to the bit.

𝐌𝐚𝐫 𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐚- My name is Mar which in Spanish means « sea » and I come from the touristic island of Mallorca. I very much enjoy collecting, accumulating, organizing and rearranging all kinds of materials- I never start working from « nothing ». I like to play with what I have and build narratives emerging from this personal archive. In that way, the methodology is directly linked to the work. Instead of having an initial idea, and then working to explain it, the explanation is developed in the process of making. The type of narrative that interests me is one that remains open, that is not linear and that forces the viewer to make connections, associations and interpret it in their own way.

𝐏𝐚𝐨𝐥𝐨 𝐆𝐥𝐞𝐧 is a moving-image artist who combines the collection of digital ephemera with experimental animation. Based in the South West of England, his interests include moving things, shiny objects, and other people’s stuff.

𝐉𝐨𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫
I mostly work with photography and video, but my practice also includes drawing, painting, sculpture and events. My work primarily revolves around myth-making; the creation of false realities or fictions based on lived experience.

𝐁𝐞𝐧 𝐑𝐚𝐦𝐬𝐚𝐲 is an award-nominated writer/director from Kirkcaldy, Fife. He adores genre-driven, experimental storytelling, and his work often revolves around darkly comic circumstances and commentary on contemporary life in working class Scotland as well as industrial history.

𝐑𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐇𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐭𝐨𝐧
Recently returned to Edinburgh. Recently returned to making artwork. I mostly work in print (lithography). Becoming older has allowed me to express feelings about being a queer/gay man in my artwork that I had previously avoided. I love to document the world around me. The people, objects, and landscapes that enrich my life.

A close captioning workshop with Holly Summerson, Thursday 11 December, 18:00-20:00. This event is free but ticketed, follow the link in our bio to book a space.

Join us in exploring the role of captioning in the production and display of moving-image work and learn how to do it yourself. Artist and animator Holly Summerson will be guiding us through how to embed captioning into moving image works and your wider artistic practice. Participants will then have a go at captioning their own films (so bring any along) or a selection of examples.

If you have access to a laptop, please bring it along and download the free captioning software Aegisub before attending (https://aegisub.org/). If you need to borrow one please do send us an email ([email protected]) and we’ll arrange an alternative. Further information is in the ticket link in our bio.

This event is part of a series of workshops running alongside Biscuit Tin, our annual artists moving image festival which will take place on the 13th and 14th December.

Holly Summerson is an animator and artist focused on experimental, mixed-media and community-based work. She draws on her experiences as a Hard of Hearing film-maker and film lover to develop creative closed captions for film and artists’ moving image.

Scratching the Surface: cameraless filmmaking with found footage, a workshop by Esmé Haddrill Selman, Sunday 7 December, 14:00-16:00.

This event is free but ticketed, follow the link in our bio to book a space.

Working with found super 8 footage, this workshop provides participants with the chance to play with celluloid film and respond to found images in a tactile capacity, introducing those involved to the possibilities of cameraless filmmaking in the process. Using direct animation techniques, we will animate directly onto physical found footage using a range of materials and methods to alter the film’s surface with our hands. The workshop will encourage those involved to also consider what it means to work with found footage and images which aren’t our own. This is an opportunity to engage with celluloid film in a low stakes, collaborative context, with the chance to learn new techniques and see firsthand the different effects these can achieve. The session will end with a screening of the finished film, offering participants the chance to see their work in motion.

‘Scratching the Surface’ is part of a series of workshops running alongside Biscuit Tin, our annual artists moving image festival. We are still accepting submissions for the screenings on December 13 & 14, all the information is on our website.

Esmé Haddrill Selman is a Glasgow based artist filmmaker working with the moving image as the central point of her creative practice. Her work broadly explores the affective nature of the moving image and how it can capture our embodied experience, and has included experiments with interactive media, film installation and sculpture, alongside ongoing moving image work using analogue formats, found film, and cameraless filmmaking amongst other methods.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH - back next week !
Weds 19th Nov 6-8PM at Embassy 🎥

Neighbourhood Watch is a space for discussion around moving image- video art, youtube clips, animation, tiktoks, documentaries…

You can bring your own artworks to chat about, or anything you’ve been inspired by recently that you want to discuss if you don’t make moving image work. You can even not bring anything except opinions !

It’s open to any quality of video and any kind of artist, or just anyone interested in engaging with moving-image works in a communal space.

Share up to 10 minutes of work, or simply come to watch and offer feedback—no application needed! Bring clips, excerpts, sketches, unfinished pieces, or fully realised works, and let us know what kind of feedback you’d like.

After each showing, there’s time for responses and discussion, though you’re also welcome to show something without commenting. This is a space for all types of feedback, from casual chats to critical engagement—whatever suits you.

A digital projector, computer, and speakers will be available. You can bring a USB on the day, but it’s preferred to share films in advance via a pre-existing link (e.g., YouTube or Vimeo).
