We at the museum understand that young children may find the museum a bit boring as we are more about the history of Magic than the fantastical. So we will be soon be permanently installing a fun scavenger hunt for both child and family.
If they can find all 13 Black Cat images hidden throughout the museum and if they win a wee Black Cat toy.

We also are looking to have more family events in future for the wee bairns to enjoy.

The Mysterious Seelie Wight Women

16th-century Scottish Folk belief and history interwoven to tell the tale of Maggie and Jonet's initiation into the ways of the seelie wight witches. A story of faith in faerie law, friendship and nature, with some music and ritual. Two working-class Lowland Scottish women learn to make folk belief their mode of survival and a way to navigate the seismic and often dangerous changes to politics, faith and ordinary life in the century that saw the Reformation and the Scottish Witchcraft Act.

Ancient Greek Necromancy (Workshop)

Communication with the dead was an integral part of Ancient Greek culture, but one that remains little known and often misunderstood. Nevertheless, the Ancient Greeks have left us with a wealth of powerful necromantic techniques that can still be used by practitioners today. In this practical workshop, scholar- practitioner Jules McArthur will give an illustrated lecture on the beliefs and practices of necromancy in the Ancient Greek world, from the Archaic Period to the Greek Magical Papyri. In the second half of the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to put what they have learnt into practice and take part in a necromantic ritual based on Ancient Greek techniques.

Topics covered will include:

- Ancient beliefs about the dead and how they developed over a thousand years of Greek history
- Necromancy in Homer's Iliad and Odyssey

- Tomb Cults and Hero Cults

- Oracles of the Dead

- Necromancy and Dreams

- Methods of conjuring the dead

- The protocols and procedures for safely interacting with the dead

- How to adapt ancient magical practices for modern use

Queerness and the Modern Witchcraft Revival

Many q***r people today, disenchanted by mainstream religions, come to witchcraft seeking a spiritual practice that embraces and celebrates their identities. However, the relationship between modern witchcraft and q***rness is a complex one, at various times affirming and at others antagonistic. In this illustrated lecture, Jules McArthur will investigate the roles that both q***r people and ideas about q***rness had in the development of modern witchcraft. They will discuss notable figures such as Aleister Crowley and Doreen Valiente, as well as lesser-known ones, including Jani Farrell-Roberts, one of the first trans High Priestesses in Gardnerian Wicca. Finally, they will close by exploring what it means to be a q***r witch today.

Today on The National Day of Remembrance, commemorating the day in 1563 of the passing of the witchcraft act.
We remember the nearly 4000 accused (that we know of), we remember their names, their stories and the injustice of this dark time in history.

The museum was more than delighted to have backed creation of this wonderful book 'Witch- The Book of Remembrance' created by the collective artists of Creative Coven -1563 and brought together by Rowan Morrison. The Creative Coven's aims are to have a National Day of Remembrance for Scotland's Accused Witches.

Only few copies where made for those who backed the project and is filled with beautiful art work and poetry by local artists honouring the lives of those accused in Scotland. You can even see some artwork by the museum's director in the book.

The book will be going on display in the museum for one month only in June for visitors to view. The 4th of June marked the Scottish Witchcraft Act of 1563 and so the book itself serves a Remembrance of those accused.
