Shared Land brings together two contrasting landscape artists whose subject matter centres on Edinburgh and its surrounding countryside.

Sandra Vick is a Scottish artist specialising in painting and drawing. Her practice investigates landscapes and mountain environments, with a particular focus on the interaction between natural processes and human influence over time. Through careful consideration of silhouette, texture and spatial relationships, her work explores how foreground detail and distant forms contribute to a strong sense of place. Grounded in immersive observation, Sandra frequently works en plein air, producing studies directly from the landscape. These studies inform larger studio works, enabling her to respond intuitively to variations in light, weather and terrain. Sandra trained at Edinburgh College of Art.

Simon Rivett’s drawings of Edinburgh’s urban environment focus on refining and re-examining his visual interests. His subjects are often the closes and quieter suburbs of Edinburgh, chosen for their potential to explore light, shadow and strong compositional elements. Working with ink, gouache, charcoal, graphite and a range of papers, he values drawing for its immediacy and flexibility, embracing the rich variety of marks the medium offers. Simon trained at Goldsmiths College in London.

Remedies: Open Call for Artist Bookmakers

Exhibition - Nov 27 - Dec 19 2026

This year’s artist bookmakers exhibition is on the theme of remedies.

How do we respond when something goes wrong - whether that’s illness, injury or injustice? What does it really mean to heal, repair or restore?

Artist bookmakers are invited to explore these ideas from medical, legal, personal and wider ethical angles. Remedies aren’t neutral, they’re shaped by human decisions, values and the systems we live within. What gets fixed, how it’s fixed and who decides, all matters.

We’re also interested in the space between prevention and cure. Is it better to stop something from happening in the first place, or to deal with it afterwards? And what do we gain - or lose - through each approach? These questions run through everything from healthcare to philosophy and can open up reflections on resilience, responsibility and care.

Take this brief wherever it leads you. We’re excited to see personal, experimental and unexpected responses to what a “remedy” might be.

What an incredible success the art exhibition has been! 🎨
A huge thank you to the 50 talented artists who generously submitted their work. The exhibition showcased an amazing diversity of styles, subjects and mediums, reflecting just how much creativity and passion there is within our artistic community. The standard of work on display was exceptionally high, and it was truly inspiring for everyone who attended. Your talent and generosity made this event something really special.
We are especially grateful to Ian from Upright Gallery and Frances Martin Art for their hard work in organising the exhibition and giving their time to help run it so smoothly throughout.
A big thank you as well to Braid Hills Hotel for providing freshly baked scones each morning for our cream teas — they were thoroughly enjoyed by all! And to Brakes for supplying the delicious clotted cream and jam that made them extra special.
Finally, thank you to everyone who came along to support the exhibition, and to those who purchased artwork — your generosity will make a real difference.
We couldn’t have done it without you all! 💛
