The ancient Fire Festival of Beltane is traditionally held on first of May, close to the midway point between the Spring Equinox and Summer Solstice.

The bonfires of Beltane were believed to offer protection against harm from both natural and supernatural causes. One tradition of the old Beltane celebrations was to light a pair of bonfires and drive livestock between them, before they were let out to summer pasture. Another tradition was for people to cover themselves, animals, or crops with the ashes from the fire once it had cooled.

This Bank Holiday Saturday, 2 May we will be holding the first of our Celtic Celebrations of the year - Beltane, or Calan Mai. There will be hands-on activities and seasonal themed crafts as well as story-making around the fire.

At 3.30pm we will have our celebration around the bonfire, or around the fire in the Meeting House if it is too wet to be outside, to banish away the winter.

Before the introduction of the spinning wheel to Europe in the 13th century, all yarn would have been spun by hand using a drop spindle.

Small and easily portable a drop spindle could be taken anywhere and used at any time, allowing for thread to be made on the go. The downside being they could also be easily lost, which might be bad for the owner, but is great for the archaeologist who find what’s left hundreds if not thousands of years later! While the wooden shaft may rot away the whorl, the weighted disc, would often be made of materials such as stone, clay, or bone, would survive much longer.

You can find out more about the techniques of using a drop spindle and learn the basics needed to create your own yarn from fleece in our Family Spinning Workshop on Saturday 23 May. During this relaxed workshop, you will be introduced to spinning wool using a drop spindle, no experience necessary.

Castell Henllys will be welcoming back the Romans on Sunday 24 and Monday 25 May.

The Romans may not have been very popular during their first visits to Britain nearly 2000 years ago, but can expect a much warmer welcome now!

It is thought that the Iron Age settlement at Castell Henllys was abandoned about 100 years before the Roman invasion, so the site would never have seen a Roman attack. However, there is evidence that the area just outside of the defences was occupied during the Romano British period.

This later farmstead would likely have been built by local people, but taking inspiration from Roman fashions and traditions as well as local ones. Artefacts excavated from the Romano British portion of the site include trade goods such as pottery from southern England and sherds of amphorae from Spain.

Glass beads were also found from the Romano British settlement, suggesting local people were adopting some Roman fashions. The Roman Invasion at Castell Henllys will give visitors a chance to find out more about Roman fashions, as well warfare and life as a solider.

There will also be hands on activities, as well as our usual Iron Age offer!
