Last Friday, a conference was held in memory of the influential and much missed Prof Ken Glennie at Aberdeen University, organised by Geology Department and the Aberdeen Geological Society. After a day of lectures, the group travelled to Elgin Museum for an opportunity to view and discuss our Recognised Collection with our Geology Group Volunteers. We were delighted to welcome the group, and Ken's family, to the museum!

Over the following two days a large group examined the geology along the Hopeman to Covesea coastline with glorious, but cold, weather to make the excursion highly memorable.

Ken Glennie was extremely well known & well respected in geological circles, and his book Introduction to the Petroleum Geology of the North Sea was an inspiration to many. After a long career at Shell he became an honorary professor at the University of Aberdeen in 1995, where he shared his knowledge and passion for the subject with both students and staff. The conference was a fitting memorial to a geological legend.

Celebrating with something that's certainly cheered us up! 😃

May we present this O-FISH-AL 🐟 souvenir postcard of Elgin (ELGNM: 1968.13), recorded today by our -funded Inventory Project Manager.

Inside this fishy fella are 12 black & white photos of Elgin Landmarks, including Elgin Cathedral, High Street & Pansport.

The postcard was made in the early 1900s by Valentine & Sons, a company founded by famed Dundonian photographer James Valentine (1815-1879), which went on to become Scotland’s leading manufacturer of picture postcards.

Introducing the first of our competition runners-up; Elgin Museum

https://elginmuseum.org.uk/museum/

Elgin Museum is Scotland's oldest independent museum, opened in 1843 by the Elgin and Morayshire Scientific Association, a forerunner of The Moray Society.

The collection they submitted to the competition comprised some of the artefacts in the James Cooper Clark Collection, which were collected from various archaeological sites in Central & South America in the late 19th & early 20th Century and pre-date the Spanish Conquest of the continent of South America in the 1500s.

James Cooper Clark was a Moray-born archaeologist and scholar of ancient American civilisations whose work took him to Central & South America. In 1927 he was part of the British Museum’s expedition to British Honduras (now Belize). He was a recognised authority on early Mexican civilisation, best known for editing and translating the Codex Mendoza (a 16th Century Mexican manuscript containing a history of Aztec rulers and their conquests as well as a description of the daily life of pre-conquest Aztec society - the Codex Mendoza is now in the Bodleian Library, Oxford).

JCC gifted nearly 120 artefacts from his American travels to Elgin Museum in 1913. The accession book for that year describes it as “A unique and valuable collection…acquired by Mr Clark during his travels in Mexico and … arranged and labelled in proper order by him”. The objects donated document the development over time of artistic styles of a number of pre-Columbian Central & South American civilisations, illustrating the cultural significance and complexities of an often-overlooked period in history.

Many of the objects are miniature in scale, often intricately carved or decorated on multiple faces, making it difficult to display them in a meaningful way. In the past the museum has used carefully positioned mirrors so that the viewer can see the complexity of the designs; now having the artefacts recorded digitally in 3d allows the detail and artistry of these objects to be properly appreciated, literally from every angle!

Here at MiM we would like to thank everyone from Elgin Museum involved in identifying objects, preparing documentation for the competition, giving us access for scanning and being very helpful, patient and supportive from start to finish. It was wonderful working with you!

The image shown is artefact ELGNM.1913.40 and is a Tarascan Pottery Figure.

Pre-Columbian era from Chapala, Mexico (state of Jalisco).

Male figure, seated, with arms folded resting on drawn up knees.

The Tarascan Civilization dominated western Mexico and built an empire that would bring it into direct conflict with the Aztecs. The Tarascan state, with its capital at Tzintzúntzan on Lake Pátzcuaro, controlled an empire of over 75,000 square kilometers, second in size only to the Aztec empire.

Marking International Women's Day by celebrating all of the amazing women at Elgin Museum!

More than half of our Trustees and Volunteers are women, quite a change from when the Museum first opened in 1843 when unaccompanied women weren't allowed to visit!

We're also delighted to have two very talented women working for us at the moment in -funded posts: Carenza, our Inventory Project Manager, and Chris, our Redevelopment Project Manager. Both are doing a sterling job at driving our grand ambitions for improvements & redevelopment forward!

We're incredibly grateful for all of the time and effort each and every one of these dedicated women gives to the museum. Their combined effort (along with our male volunteers & trustees) make sure Elgin Museum can continue to operate, and is a much more inclusive organisation than it was 183 years ago!

Dearest Gentle Reader,

As the second instalment of the fourth season of resumes today, we are reminded of our own Lady Whistledown, 'Gladys', who penned many fashion and gossip columns for our town in the Elgin Courant & Courier (in circulation 1877-1905).

We invite you to relish in these selections from one such column, published on 16th December 1898 (ELGNM: 2010.11.409)

This column is just one such discovery from our -funded Inventory Project, throughout which this author is certainly enthused to uncover more delights!

Yours Truly,
Elgin Museum

Today, we're celebrating a significant milestone in our NLHF-funded Inventory Project...we've reached 20,000 items! 🎉

The 20,000th item is this photographic print labelled simply "Elgin City Football Club" (ELGNM: 1994.52.4). We don't know the date, or who is in the photo - we think it's a youth team, and, judging by the trophy, they've clearly just had great success!

If you know anything more about this photo, we'd love to hear from you - please get in touch 🙂

The Spey Coracle sets off on a new journey! Last week, our coracle was collected by Scottish Conservation Studio as step one in its conservation story. Not an easy job to get it out of the building in one piece!

This work is made possible thanks to the generous support of AIM Museum Fundamentals funded by Pilgrim Trust and The Julia Rausing Trust.
