The main talking point in reception is this amazing view of RAF Hooton Park taken in August 1945. Sadly so many Aircraft landed here to be scrapped. Mostly Halifax bombers that had been newly built just across the Mersey at Speke to fulfill the government's contract. Many were the flown up and down the Mersey to prove airworthy and landed here to be scrapped. The@ photo shows the 3 Hangars still present today, the far right of the three now the Museum. The site of Hooton Hall can just be made out just above centre. Can you spot the only Spitfire? In between two Mosquitoes. The hayricks from the surrounding farms are bushelled and ready for the harvest. Life carries on.
A snapshot in history.

On the 3rd May this year the town of Mailly-le-Camp in the North Central region of France are planning a commemorative event dedicated to the Allied bombing of the German military camp in Mailly-le-Camp during the night of 3–4 May 1944.

They are really keen to engage with the families of the men who flew on the operation from any of the following squadrons:

9, 12, 44, 50, 57, 83, 97, 101, 103, 166, 207, 460, 463, 467, 550, 576, 619, 625, 626, 169 or 192.

All except for the last two squadrons were part of 1 and 5 Group. The last two were part of 100 group.

261 men lost their lives that day, 18 were taken PoW, 33 evaded and only 6 returned unscathed.

If your ancestor was part of this operation, we would love to be able to pass your details onto the Mailly-le-Camp heritage association. Please DM or email [email protected]
