Interested in seeing our Newcomen Engine in action, it is a great place to stay cool! It is running this Sunday 28 June!

Make sure to book your place to learn how:
🔹The Engine at Elsecar is the oldest atmospheric engine still in its original location in the world!
🔹It was invented by Thomas Newcomen to pump water from the coal mines, and is known as the first ever practical engine.
🔹Restored in 2014 and now using a hydraulic system to preserve the engine parts, the engine house continues to be maintained and looked after by our fantastic volunteers.

To book your place or for more information regarding accessibility (the engine house includes two narrow staircases and a deep step to enter) please contact [email protected].

Be part of our exciting Made in Elsecar Market at the historic Elsecar Ironworks. Are you a maker, independent business or high-quality trader looking for your next standout opportunity? Elsecar Heritage Centre is building a new programme of curated markets and events, designed to bring together brilliant local and regional businesses in a setting full of character, heritage and atmosphere.

We’re looking for traders who can help us create high-quality, memorable experiences for visitors, from beautifully made crafts and gifts to food, drinks and specialist products. Events are back at Elsecar Heritage Centre this summer, with a new programme of curated experiences made to be discovered! 🎉 From Saturday 8 August, the Ironworks will once again welcome visitors for specialist markets, comedy nights, workshops, antiques and more.

It’s a fresh chapter for Elsecar, bringing new reasons to visit, spend time with friends and family, and enjoy events inspired by the spirit of the village. We’ll be adding even more new events soon, so keep an eye on our website and social media channels!

Why not pay a visit to Elsecar Heritage Centre this weekend, there’s something for everyone!

With a wide range of independent traders selling crafts, gifts, sweets, records, shoes, and health foods, a cafe, bespoke furniture traders, a craft beer pub, antiques centre, indoor play area, a vintage memorabilia dealer, and not forgetting our Visitor Centre, there’s something for everyone!

Teams will be on site over the coming weeks to help tidy up w**ds and growth in the area behind the Iron Works.

At the end of June, we’ll be strimming w**ds and removing large plants that have grown. Towards the end of July, we’ll apply w**d treatment and then come back mid-August to clear the w**ds up once they’ve died off.

This work is part of our ongoing care for the site and will help keep the area tidy and welcoming, complementing the fantastic work of our dedicated volunteers! 🍃

An update on drainage works 📢 We’re now entering the final phases of the improvement works! Please continue to visit our fantastic range of local, indie businesses at Elsecar Heritage Centre.

We expect the works to be completed by early August, with most of the public spaces finished by the school holidays. But remember – you can still access all your favourite shops, food and drink, and makers while the works are happening.

The drainage scheme has encountered some unexpected delays, including having to hand dig in certain areas to protect unearthed, significant industrial structures such as mine shafts, wells and other culverts related to the site's past. We've now protected these and re-covered them up. We did expect to find historical structures underground, but not at the frequency and scale that we have. This has impacted on the time taken to address and safeguard these elements. We’ve brought on more crews to help speed up the programme.

Our volunteer team are busy preparing for our new walking tour with one Elsecar resident already signed up!

The new tour takes visitors along the historic Elsecar canal to the Hemingfield Colliery basin where we will be joined by volunteers from Hemingfield Colliery - FoHC.

Discover how this remarkable waterway helped shape the growth of the Earl Fitzwilliam’s industrial village and beyond.

You will also learn how the Dearne and Dove Canal, constructed in the late 1700s, connected Elsecar’s collieries and Ironworks to wider markets and played a vital role in transforming the area into a thriving industrial hub.

This two‑hour tour begins at the Visitor Centre at 10am on Friday 19 June and costs £10 per person.

Please note, there may be some uneven surfaces under foot, and the tour will follow the Trans Pennine Trail.

Pride of Yorkshire comes to Elsecar! 🌟🦁

As well as the two sculptures in Elsecar Park, we’ve got our very own right here at Elsecar Heritage Centre. Why not come tick the lioness off your trail map, visit the fantastic independent businesses across site, and support Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity by purchasing the trail map or merch from Elsecar’s Visitor Centre?

The lioness, Underneath The Stars - beautifully designed by artist Matt Sewall, celebrates Barnsley’s own Kate Rusby!

Due to a short delay in sculpture installation, some of the other Barnsley lions will be joining the trail slightly later than planned. This will be reflected on the Pride of Yorkshire website - so make sure to check ahead before you start the trail!
