Barnsley Museums is celebrating !

It is always great to see our volunteers enjoying their experience at Elsecar Heritage Centre!

We would love to share a massive thank you for their hard work and support with our varied programme of outdoor maintenance and engagement roles chatting with our visitors.

⭐ One volunteer shared how, “When I first started volunteering, I didn’t know what to expect, I was looking for something to do, and I really wanted to learn about the area and get involved. I also wanted to gain new skills, use tools and meet new people. As soon as I got started, I loved working with all the volunteers and felt a massive part of the team from day one. I have made some friendships that will last forever and it’s really helped me step back into employment, gain confidence and I will always be a part of Team Elsecar!”

Volunteering can improve your confidence; help you make new friends and give you some important skills.

Barnsley Museums have teamed up with Skills & Employability at Barnsley Council who support people into volunteering and employment as well as training opportunities.

✅ Canary challenge complete!

🐤Did you know that canaries were once used in coal mines to raise the alarm if poisonous gases were released, saving the lives of the miners themselves? However rather than let the canaries die, canary resuscitators were invented to revive our little heroes.

🎨🧒Today children visiting Elsecar Heritage Centre learnt about this fascinating piece of history and made their own peg canaries and then designed and made their own canary inspired inventions.
From canary TVs, bikes, boats, beds and feeding machines, we’ve seen an amazing array today!
Well done everybody! 👏

Join us for a new and fascinating guided walk along the historic Elsecar canal to the Hemingfield Colliery basin where we will be joined by volunteers from Hemingfield Colliery - FoHC.

Discover how this remarkable waterway helped shape the growth of the Earl Fitzwilliam’s industrial village and beyond.

You will also learn how the Dearne and Dove Canal, constructed in the late 1700s, connected Elsecar’s collieries and Ironworks to wider markets and played a vital role in transforming the area into a thriving industrial hub.

This two‑hour tour begins at the Visitor Centre at 10am on Friday 19 June and costs £10 per person.

Please note, there may be some uneven surfaces under foot, and the tour will follow the Trans Pennine Trail.
