Dementia Action Week at Enniskillen Castle 💙
We were delighted to welcome the Fermanagh branch of the Alzheimer's Society Northern Ireland to Enniskillen Castle on Monday 18 May for a special event marking Dementia Action Week.
Organised by the Alzheimer's Society in partnership with Enniskillen Castle, the event brought together service users for a day centred on connection, creativity and shared experiences. The local Dementia Café has an established relationship with the Castle through ongoing reminiscence work, and this event offered a fantastic opportunity to build on that partnership and explore how we can continue working together.
The day focused on music, dance and movement, with the brilliant Dance Corner Experience led by Dylan Quinn Dance Theatre. There was laughter, energy and real joy as participants took to the floor and quite literally danced their way into Dementia Action Week.
Dance Corner was commissioned by LuailDance, Ireland’s National Dance Company, as part of their all island project To This I Belong, highlighting the powerful role creativity can play in supporting wellbeing.
Music and movement are increasingly recognised as valuable approaches for people living with dementia. They can help reduce stress, support emotional wellbeing and maintain a sense of identity. Many participants chose songs that were meaningful to them, reflecting the Playlist for Life approach, where familiar music can spark memories and connection.
A big thank you to Enniskillen Tesco Community Champion Martina Reynolds and Asda Community Champion Simon Harron for kindly providing refreshments and supporting the Alzheimer's Society in this important community event.
By working together, we can help raise awareness, reduce stigma and strengthen connections for those living with dementia and their families.
