Today we celebrate the birth of John Wesley in 1703. John was born in Epworth and lived for many years at what is now the Old Rectory, which was built 6 years after his birth.

One of the most dramatic moments in John's early life took place when he was just five years old. Late on the night of 9 February 1709, a fire broke out at the Epworth Rectory. While the rest of the family escaped, young John was trapped upstairs as the flames spread and the roof threatened to collapse.

In a dramatic rescue, parishioners lifted him from an upper window to safety. This event was later remembered as a sign that John had been spared for a special purpose and it became an important part of the Wesley story.

As we celebrate his birthday, we reflect on the life and legacy of a man whose influence on faith, education, and social reform continues to be felt around the world.

🌳🌹Our fantastic garden volunteers Chris and Guy have created this great new raised bed today in our gardens. This will be used to extend our sensory and memory gardens for our work with people living with dementia from our local communities.

Our living history Volunteers have made such a huge difference to visits at Epworth Old Rectory. From demonstrating handicrafts such as needlepoint, knitting, lacemaking and drop spinning to making soap balls and historic cookery for our visitors.
We would welcome anyone else who’d like to join us - historic costumes and all resources are provided and we especially welcome anyone who’d like to bring a new skill to share or join in with one we’ve already researched. Contact Ami on [email protected] to chat
