Studio 36

Studio 36 In the heart of Exeter, our studio is a hive of artistic activity. https://www.studio36exeter.co.uk There seems to be no division between thinking and seeing.

The initial impact of entering Studio 36 is a rich, visual experience. It is a personal and stimulating world where art runs riot through the whole house, along corridors and up walls. Studio 36, in the heart of St Leonard’s, Exeter was established by Veronica Gosling following her relocation to Devon from The Forest of Dean where she instituted the Barn at Hay Farm Gallery. The description of tha

t as “a secret special place that people find and then want to bring their friends” has been transposed to Studio 36 which now has some of the same reputation. In addition there is a wild sculpture garden with many objects hanging from trees and since the recent retirement of Gallery 36 Veronica hopes to continue the occasional hosting of collaborative events with other artists. Previously such events have led to further ideas, and further happenings, such as an interesting discussion group for artist of one kind and another entitled The Beast Within, where contributing artists talked about the beasts that made them work, stopped them working or altogether stirred up (or destroyed!) the creative urge. As artists of diverse media meet up new ideas emerge and new collaborations are always being formed. A few ideas are in the pipeline at this moment, and Veronica is always open to new and really interesting ideas and skills, such as, for instance, a sound and lighting sculpture in her precipitous tree inhabited garden.

Dear friends and supporters of Studio 36,

We write to thank all of you who joined us on Sunday May 17th to celebrate the life and work of Veronica Gosling, and the remarkable community she gathered around Studio 36.

It was a beautiful tribute, filled with art, music, food, performance, poetry, demonstrations, children’s activities, conversation, and shared memories. More than anything, it seemed to capture something of Veronica’s energy and spirit. It meant a great deal to us to hear so many stories and reflections, and to feel the affection, gratitude, and admiration that so many people held for her.

As one participant so eloquently put it, the event was “brimming with pathos and joy, the house and garden and everyone who came, infused with her presence. She continues to live and burn within our souls.”

We know that not everyone who cared about Veronica or Studio 36 was able to be there in person, but we felt your connection too, and we are grateful for the wider circle of friendship and support around her life and work.

At this point, the future of Studio 36 and Veronica’s work remains uncertain. But whatever the future holds, we are deeply grateful to have been able to gather in this way, and to celebrate her together.

With warm gratitude,
The Gosling Family & The Studio Team

Thank you Dominic Garnett for a lovely write up about Veronica 🙂

To anybody creating music or art, inspiration comes in many guises. All of us need mentors and people who give us the courage to create and think differently. This is why I'm still mourning the passing of Veronica Gosling. Eccentric, rebellious and kind, I cannot quite put into words just how import...

Get On Board 57 - a selection of works by Veronica Gosling

Peter Farrie, a long time friend and member of the studio team said these words:

‘An extraordinary 'artist', Veronica was not always comfortable with that term and the air of pretentiousness that it can imply. She said to me once when asked how she would categorise herself simply that 'I make things'.
Not always relying on conventional materials she would use whatever was around her, found items, leftovers. Nothing was wasted, she instinctively had a sustainable mindset. Veronica was constantly encouraging others, interested in what we were doing, how we thought, what made us tick. This can be seen in the countless exhibitions and events she held at Studio 36 and the Community Board outside that she started in 2020 as a brilliant response to the Covid lockdown’

Today we have put up the new board with some of her work.

We would like to thank everyone for the generous donations made in memory of Veronica, both organisations are extremely grateful - the donation link has now closed but any further donations can be made direct via their websites:

New Year Greetings

The Gosling Family and Studio Team would like to send thanks to everybody for all the thoughtful messages of condolence received, and gratitude to those who attended Veronica's funeral, both in person and virtually

We have not yet decided what we'll be doing with Veronica's pottery and art. One possibility is to keep it all together as a collection. Another is to distribute it to suitable homes. In any case, we shall not be distributing any of it for a while (probably at least until her memorial exhibition).

In the meantime we are gathering any requests for her pottery or other art into one place; that way, in the eventuality that we decide to distribute it, we can find good homes for it. So, please list here any pieces you would like (we don't yet know if these will be sold or we'll ask for some donation or something else entirely). Please provide as much detail as you can on this form -
