Have you ever seen a mummified person? If your answer is ‘yes’, it is likely this interaction was in a museum… But what about an art gallery?

The 19th century saw a lucrative trade in the remains of ancient Egyptian mummified people and animals, with some being exported to appear in cabinets of curiosity and museum displays. Perhaps most shocking though was the making and use of so called “mummy brown” paint.

In this online talk, Dr Lauren Bruce will uncover the myths and realities behind and use of “mummy brown” paint, reframing our understanding beyond prevailing Gothic associations to recognise the colonial violence that produced and manufactured it.

Looking at artworks by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Eugène Delacroix, Lawrence Alma-Tadema, and Edward Burne-Jones from a travel, art history, and Gothic perspective, she aims to find a balance to demonstrate the materiality and violent reality of “mummy brown” paint.

This Wednesday, join Hugh Harrison FSA at RAMM for a fascinating exploration of the restoration of Russia's declining parish Churches.

Hugh is the longest-established independent timber conservation contractor in the UK and leads a specialist company of consultants, designers and contractors in the conservation and surveying of historic structural and decorative woodwork and the design and manufacture of new bespoke work in conservation settings.

Hugh works closely with heritage organisations, architects, paint conservators, diocesan advisory committees and other technical specialists.

Today marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of iconic English painter John Constable.

Born in 1776, Constable is best known for his landscape paintings in the Romantic style. At RAMM we are lucky to have a number of his drawings in the collections. These pencil studies show Constable's eye for form and movement.

Celebrate the start of summer with us on a day out exploring the spectacular world of colour – museum visit, cake and music. An exhibition of 150 objects combines art, science, nature and history in surprising ways.

Soak up the vibes, and feel free to wear a splash of colour or a whole rainbow.

Suitable for people with mild to moderate memory issues, who must be accompanied (carers go free). Tickets include exhibition entry and refreshments.
