A recent study found that engaging with arts and culture may be linked to slower biological ageing.

So we're not saying our Art for Wellbeing course is the fountain of youth... but we're not not saying it either. 😉

Join artist Eve Bourrat for three relaxed, creative sessions exploring identity through collage, paint and mixed media in a welcoming and supportive environment.

Today’s theme is Myths and Legends, to tie in with the exhibition currently on show at .

The Mermaid of Zennor is a Cornish folk tale recorded around 1873, though it is believed to be far older — many oral traditions were not written down until the 19th century.

The legend tells of a mysterious woman who was seen attending services at St Senara’s Church in Zennor. The church choir was famed for its singing, particularly that of a young man named Mathey Trewella, whose voice was said to be so beautiful he sang the final hymn alone. Drawn by his song, a mermaid would secretly enter the church to listen. When Mathey eventually noticed her, the two fell deeply in love. He followed her down to Pendour Cove, where they disappeared beneath the waves, never to be seen again.

In a later encounter, sailors met a mermaid who asked them to lift anchor so she could return home — villagers believed this to be the same woman. The story is also linked to a carved pew end in St Senara’s Church depicting a mermaid.

In Eric J Mellon’s personal interpretation of The Mermaid of Zennor, the mermaid appears in the foreground in her ‘natural’ form. The entwined lovers in the middle ground are thought to represent the mermaid and Mathey Trewella. The artist interweaves the legend with other unrelated motifs, including a moon goddess (top left), entwined lovers, and the clocktower at Porthleven.
